HID question D2S=D2C=D2R?

So story goes...

I was at a local custom audio place this past weekend because I heard they had HID bulbs for sale. Turns out they sell the less expensive osrams (CBI?) at a decent price. Asked if they had the D2S size and was told that they were out unfortunately. But the guy (owner of the shop apparently) said that the D2C and D2R sizes were essentially the same bulb, just less glass/shorter. He also said that a lot of people with the D2S bulbs are going with the D2C as a replacement due to a smaller bulb and ease of install (I call and think he was just trying to make a sale).

But the D2S=D2C=D2R has intrigued me. Can you use the other bulbs as direct replacements for our OEM bulbs or was this guy just trying to be a salesman? Has anyone tried it? Is the light output/bulb life the same?

Thanks

Negative. They are not the same. Sure they fit in the same socket, but the light pattern output is different. I'm not familiar with D2C, but D2R is designed for nonprojector headlight housings. The bulb is shorter to prevent glare for reflector HID setup. The light output is not optimal for our projector housings.

Thanks modme. That makes sense. So you don't have experience with the D2C, but have eliminated the D2R pretty much.

Anyone have any experience with D2C as a replacement of our D2S?

The D2C is essentially a D2S bulb. The only difference is it has both notches to support D2S and D2R. A pointless bulb really. But you can run it on a D2S system.

Thank you for your input.

As Modme said with the D2R bulb, is there any light output difference with the D2C vs the D2S?

The bulbs used in HID xenon lights are normally either D2R or D2S bulbs and to a casual observer they seem identical, but if you look closely at the base of these bulbs you will see that their designs are slightly different. This means that a D2R bulb will not fit into a D2S bulb holder and vice versa. Fortunately there is now a new type of HID xenon bulb called the D2C, which has a universally designed base, and so can be used to replace either a D2R or D2S bulb. Because the D2C bulb has this universal fitting it is a great choice for any driver who needs to replace a HID xenon bulb but is unsure of which type they require. All of the Kaixen xenon bulbs have this D2C design and they are also available in a range of stylish colors.

What's odd is that althought the D2S and D2R have different notches, the D2R has a shield on it that the D2C doesn't have, thus making the D2C unusable in the place of the D2R. Yes you can run it in place of a D2R but then you will just add glare, that's why you don't use D2S in place of D2R. So then why do they promote a universal bulb that really isn't universal at all.
