08 G37S Door Grip Refinish

As most of us have experienced the door grips on the G are scratch magnets, I recently acquired my G less than a month ago. I assume the prev owner wore jeans with spikes on the front pockets. In an attempt to keep from buying the grips brand new, I at least wanted to try to refinish the originals. And to my own disbelief I was more than pleased with the results. Pics below...

Here are the grips before refinish..

here are the grips after a 100grit sandpaper sanding to remove to clear coat. Then sanded with a sanding scuff pad.
**** be sure to remove ALL of the clear coat, if you don't it will bubble up & rise thru the new paint, learned this the hard way!!****

Here they are with a two coats of paint which I will show which paints I used at the end.

At this point I have almost two coats of clear sprayed.

At this point I have three coats of clear sprayed.

Now after three coats of clear, dried overnight, wetsanded with 2000 grit paper, one more coat of clear, wet sanded again, & polished with Meguiar's Swirl Remover, Topped off with Meguiars Yellow Wax#26

Here they are installed on the door. Doesn't match persay but...blends in color wise IMO. Only costs me $16 in material and a little time. And i'm ok with that. Plus the clear coat is very durable, dries to a rock hard finish.

Here are the paints I used, the rustoleum color I used do to its similarities to an aluminum finish. The Clear coat because it dries to an hard clear glossy finish.

Just fyi, I've had these done for about two weeks, not one scratch so far...

Any questions I can answer, feel free... comments welcomed, ignorance isn't!!

Nice work. Yeah the 08 grips suck. I replaced mine with 09 so they match the rest of the wasi trim.

thanks, as much as I love this car, I won't have it long, so I wanted them to look somewhat stock, I would have preferred to paint em black, which I may do the the steering wheel bezel, which is starting to peel already.
