Frustrated with the paint on a 2009 G37X...

I just picked up a 2009 G37X coupe in Vibrant Red with 4,000 miles. The first thing I always do when I pick up a new car is give it a thorough detail inside and out. Now I have been detailing my own vehicles since I have started driving about ten years ago. Never in those ten years have I ever had so much trouble correcting minor paint defects that occur from regular washing/drying. I have tried at least three different compounds including M105, 3m Perfect it compound, and Menzerna SIP. I have tried various pads including Lake Country orange, yellow, and purple wool pads to no avail. This was done with various levels of pressure as well. On the trunk just for the hell of it, I made at least 4 passes and it barely made any discernible difference on the spider webbing in the paint. I used my Flex 3401 and my old porter cable with smaller pads towards the end because I was starting to lose my sanity, lol. Even on my SL55 which has a rock hard ceramic clear coat I could easily correct minor defects with just an orange pad and SIP.

What is the secret to correcting this "scratch shield" paint?!?

Having the car scuffed up and a better clearcoat applied would do the trick. I feel your pain with this paint and I have a black car which is 1000 times worse to care for. This summer the car suffered hail damage which required the replacement of the hood and trunk and a repaint of everything except the doors, bumpers and front fenders. The new clear is MUCH better than the factory paint. It may not be on the whole car but at least I have coverage over the top surfaces..

Either that or you can take a blow torch to it, the heat will "level" the clear!! Ha!!

I registered just to respond to this. Just last week I clearing up the swirls in my 2008 Obsidian Black G37S (factory paint). This was my first time using a machine polisher and the results speak for themselves.

Here are some before and after pics: (first couple of pics contain road rash)
Photo Album - Imgur

I recently purchased an entire kit from Adam's Polishes due to their 110% money back guarantee. (Complete refund if you aren't satisfied)

I went with the whole 3 step process using a porter cable.

Sever Swirl remover w/ Green PC pad
Swirl and Haze remove w/ Orange PC pad
Fine Machine Polish w/ White PC pad
Machine Super Sealant w/ Grey PC pad

I recently received my 4" spot treatment PC pads along with their glaze and carnauba wax. I'll be touching up some of the missed scratches and tighter spots this weekend followed by glazing and waxing. I would highly recommend their products to anyone.

Adams has kits for both the porter cable and the flex. They do not recommend to using the PC pads on the flex. There are many detail videos by both Adam and "The Junkman" on technique and best practices when using their products.

The site from which you can order: Adam's Premium Car Care - Cleaners, Waxes and Polishes Made in the USA

PC Kit w/o porter cable machine: Adam's Porter Cable Car Polisher Accessory Kit
Glaze and Wax: Adam's Premium Shine Detail Kit

Here's a shot of my shopping cart order: https://i.imgur.com/0urtn.png

Also be aware that without proper washing technique, you will put swirls back in your paint. (Good quality microfiber cloth, grit guards, etc.) Drive-thru machine washes are the worst culprits.

That is INSANE what that polish kit did for that black G. Well I mean, its also $650 bucks that is a pretty penny for some wax. But ****, I would have spent a lot more than that to get my old '08 back to its original look. That is awesome.

Thats why when I bought my '12, I got Graphite Shadow. I was so fed up with the Infiniti OB, I couldn't do it anymore lol. Now that my GS has been in my hands the whole time, I throw away sponges every 10 washes and use a shamois. F**king crazy

The $650 price tag on it came with a lot more than just polish and wax. The porter cable + 3 step polish and sealant can be obtained for $350.

I guess the nice thing about it is that I have my car and pic to show the improvements and I've now got 3 people lined up wanting me to restore their paint after the new year. $250/person for 4-5 hour process. Not too shabby.

I'll probably end up getting a flex polisher before long as you can get much faster results.

That is exactly why I purchased the 2 bucket wash. The process cleans your car while putting minimal-to-zero swirling on your clearcoat. It may be a 6 hour process to get the paint back to perfection, but after a sealant followed by a coat of wax, its very easy to maintain that shine. Maybe a 1-2 hours of work every few months to keep that shine. Totally worth the pride!

edit: Damn, I sound like a salesman for Adams. I'm not, nor do I get any kickbacks. I'm just excited that its so easy for me to maintain that new car shine.
