My 2008 G37s needs a HID ballast, but it requires whole assy?

So noticed the drivers low/high beam turns on, then flickers after about 20 seconds then goes off. Neither low or high beams work. I can shut them off, turn em back on 3-4 times and then it will stay on. Apparently this repeated off/on heats the bulb up enough to keep it going after a few tries.

I took it to dealer under warranty knowing it was the ballast. They called me and confirmed it is indeed the ballast but told me the ballast is wired in a way into headlight bulb as a whole only on G37S models with navigation option and the whole assy as 1 complete part is replaced and not just a ballast that ios bad. I told him it should have had plugs just to remove old ballast and plug new one in and he said no and said its easier to replace it all as one whole piece ballast and bulb together.

Kinda threw me for a loop as I thought ballast was a separate box with unplug it for easy replacement leaving bulb untouched but apparently not they said for a g37s with nav. They had to order the whole assy he said. Im assuming he didnt mean the whole headlight lens assy but just a the bulb/ballast as 1 part.

So anyone know whats going on with this model with NAV option and how its wired different for replacing ballast?

They did warranty me a new battery saying 1 cells was dead and replaced some valve assy control that caused the 1 cell to go dead. Top notch place tho, as they offered me a loaner for next 4 days till part comes in which I turned down as I didnt need it.

Yea I questioned the service manager and tech and I was outnumbered as they do not just replace ballast only on this model I have, they all said its sold and put in as 1 complete assy instead. Car is being taken on a trip and needed it replaced now and they had a ballast in stock but wouldnt put it in by itself, so now it will have a halfway working headlight for a week on a trip cause they said it could not be replaced only the ballast.

Maybe they meant to say tech package as reply above mentioned instead of nav BUT it doesnt have the tech package!

Makes no sense to me either but what can you do when the whole place says nope. Anyway it aint costing me anything so really dont care, but just thinks its weird they wanna do it this way for whatever reason.

Like others had said already, you only need the ballast. Take Raul's comment seriously that man knows what he is talking about.

Yea I know its just a plug...But since its warranty work they are gonna do it their way and speaking with 2 techs, a service manager and parts manager all of whom have all been there 7+ years I was outnumbered...I sure aint spending no money out of my pocket to do it myself so whatever they wanna do is fine with me.

When I do take it back when they have part in I'm gonna go into service bay and see what they see and why they want to do it their way.

I'm not stressed really, but id be willing to bet the douche-bags think my car has tech package with AFS lighting which it does not. This is why I have never trusted taking any of my cars in for warranty work unless I know what to tell them to do or what is wrong before hand.

I'm gonna go have a talk with the dealership owner tomorrow who I know personally and get to the bottom of this.

I suspect padding the warranty $$ kickbacks for more money to the dealership. By the looks of the service bays they didnt have much business.
Shhh dont put a $70 part in with 1 hour labor, lets throw a $400 part in and 2 hours labor instead...

I believe what the guy was explaining is they only had the ballast box itself and not the rest of it to the bulb socket as one piece. He had mentioned they did not want to undo wiring from the old box and transfer it over to the new box. This sounds like whatwas going on as a box only is also sold without the extension to the bulb housing.

Update....

Went in today and they had the whole headlight assy sitting there to put in instead of just replacing the ballast. I showed the guy how easy it was to just replace the ballast on it and he said they would just rather replace the whole thing vs only the ballast.
It had nothing to do with what I was told earlier that it needed whole assy because it had nav or tech package but just the dealership would rather replace the whole assy vs ballast only.
Under warranty so I dont care but just shows you how things work at dealerships with warranty.
