California law regarding tail lights is essentially as follows:
Taillamps shall be red in color and shall be plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that taillamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear.

Well, frankly I didn’t understand it at all. Do you think this brief snapshot on July 31st proves you will never be pulled over for your tail lights? If so, I would only suggest you stay away from that Casino for a while until you study further on feasibilities, probabilities and the odds of events that have repeatedly occurred in your favor but that may suddenly turn ruinous when you least expect it.
Actually yes, I am 100% I will never get pulled over at anytime when I drive the G. At around 7;43PM, I was convoyed my cousin who drives a Subaru STi with a downpipe and HKS exhaust.. We were lined up on a light and just chatting, then we see this cop roll out of Wells Fargo bank and goes behind my cousin.. We were there for at least for 4 minutes.. Then we took off.. I already know my cousin was trying to accelerate a little slow so he wont make a lot of sound.. But his whole exhaust **** was too bad.. Then this happens after I notice hes like behind;
oh as for september 9.. that is when i did not have my axle back exhaust on.

I wonder how to interpret that law.... Does it mean the taillamp lenses shall be red, or does it mean the taillamps shall emit red light? The reason I ask is because there are plenty of newer vehicles that come with Altezza type tailights that don't have red lenses, but instead have clear lenses over silver or chrome. But of course they still illuminate red. So if the law is intended to imply that the taillamp lenses should be red, then there are a lot of people running around with unmodified cars that are illegal in California.
Of course that doesn’t settle the OP’s stubborn contention that he will never get caught with a mod that may not emit enough light during the day to satisfy the law. Sorry, but saying he only drives his brand new G37 at night is just not believable to me. But if he ever does get caught, I’m sure he will never post it here, so there’s no point in going on with this.

I must admit Chekov was right. I got pulled over last week on the San Diego freeway for illegal tail lights. They impounded my car and will not release it until the blacked out tail lights are removed and replaced with legal ones. I’m negotiating with the city regarding access to the impound lot to replace the tail lights, but I first have to wait until I can get a OEM pair. They are currently on backorder at my dealer at a cost of $800. I also have to pay daily impound fees before they will release the car, and that may add up to another $1,000. As a student, I really can’t afford any of this. It also seems someone dented my left front fender in the lot and the battery is now dead. What a mess. I should have left well enough alone.

Chekov, that's a little dramatic, no? If he does get pulled over for his taillights, I doubt his car will be impounded. Worse case scenario is most likely a "fix it" ticket and he'd be on his way. Around here, the cops aren't *****, at least the ones that I run into!

Yes, it’s a bit overdone, but I was trying to describe the worst case of a worst case scenario, albeit with a little tongue in cheek. Actually, there was a real story on another forum I read where the cop gave the driver a choice of removing her illegal windshield tint on the spot or he would have the car towed away. As it turned out the tint was removed on the spot. But I don’t think you can do that with tail lights. And should the car end up in a impound lot, considering what I’ve heard about some of them, I don’t think my account is that far-fetched.

First off, I have my tails darkened, so don't think I am trying to down talk it...but IMO it's just dumb to say "I know that I will never be pulled over ever"
Great, one cop didn't pull you over and pulled over your cousin or whatever you were trying to say by posting that text...that doesn't mean another cop will let it go.
It's great that you like your tinted tails but there's no reason to be pompous about it

It probably possible to darken the lenses to get a cool look, but not so dark that you risk breaking the law. Perhaps, use 3 coats of Nightshade instead of 6 coats.
Don't forget, the law is there for everyone's benefit and safety.
Can you imagine what it would be like outside if everyone who wanted to could have loud, obnoxious exhaust systems on their cars and no law to prevent it? It would be a nightmare.

so i am looking to tint my tail lights and i have called a couple places and this is what they said. the first place said they have never done or heard of many people painting their tail lights. they said they take the tail lights off and spray them with something then apply some sort of film/tint over the lights. The second company which i trust and got my windows tinted there said they paint them and match the paint with the color of the car. I have heard painting them looks cleaner and holds up better in the weather. Whats the best way to go i need some advice from people on here that have them done. Thanks.
. Vinyl can be removable with relative ease, if you get pulled over
