Great work but I almost think the light needs to be centered. I know that would not leave room for the air duct but the light would look better.

Check out the postioning on other high end cars, They are all mostlly mounted off- centered, yeah, plus I really wanted the function of a true vent, but thanks for your opinion, and FYI this was just the first phase, I have some tweeks in mind to improve the whole design...

Thanks, I put the missing pics back in the post, dk what happened. This was alot of fun to do and I already have a better housing design that is going to set the light back a little ( more recessed)

yogregb,

I’m very interested in this mod (the lights more than the brake cooling ducts). A few questions: What did you use for the light housings? The aluminum trim rings?

Did you put Velcro around the back of the light housings? There appears to be Velcro on them in one of your pics. Also, how exactly are the lights supported? They seem to be sitting in the housing (tube) without any solid mount. If so, do they “bounce” when you’re driving? What I mean by that is do they vibrate on the road? I’ve seen guys who added lights to their cars and the lights vibrate all over the place because they are not solidly mounted. Do you have any such issues with your set up?

Thanks for the great info so far. I plan on doing something similar in the near future.

Believe it or not, the housings are a combo of 3 different parts. A 3 inch round black cup holder with the bottom cut out, second, a round dash a/c vent duct 2 1/2 inches round and last the alum ring is a hub centric ring. The lights are PIAA 2 1/2 extreme white halogens, pretty much match the 4300k headlights and are screwed to the housings using the lights' mount bracket. After cutting the 3 inch hole with a hole saw,( you'll have to file the holes clean to de-burr them ) I used the industrial velcro to wrap around the housing so that it is absolutely tight, (acts as a shim of sorts and does not show ). I also used some black silicone behind to secure everything. They do not move or vibrate at all. You can see why this really can't be a DIY because of the custom parts and fabrication req'd. My new design will replace the housing with a new ABS connector (found in plumbing sections, is a single piece and the ring sits nicely inside instead of glued on to the outside as it is now. The whole assy is going to sit further in to the faux panel, giving it a more recessed look. I'm also going to install the injen CAI in there and remove the duct hose so it will be a thru and thru vent, feeding the CAI and the louvered brake duct in the wheel well. It will also give me more room in there using injens' smaller washer tank. So, hope I answered your questions and like I said before, going to convert the factory fogs to DRLS and the piaa's will become the fog lights, this is a simple, just switch the wires from one to the other ( my piaa wiring is routed right by the factory fog wires. And sorry to the other poster, I don't drink beer, but IF I can help let me know. I think there is a whole bunch of different ways to get some kind of lights down in those vents, just gotta use your imagination and be willing to experiment!

This looks great; good job! Look forward to seeing the updated housing setup. I have an Injen CAI to install too so I'mgoing to try something similar at the same time. It kills me that the fogs aren't already down there where they belong...

Thanks for the info. It would be great if you could share the information on your "new" mounting parts, especially if they are parts that can easily be found in Home Depot or Lowe's plumbing section.

I like your current set-up, but I was thinking it would look even better if you were able to mount the housing more flush with the surface and then mount the light itself a little further up instead of set back so far.

I was also planning on making the factory fogs into DRLs (like the Canadian cars) and having the factory foglight switch then power the PIAAs. Looks like you've done some of my homework for me. I wasn't even sure which lights would look good in that spot and I think you've found a perfect size. I originally was thinking projector fog lights, but your PIAAs look perfect in that spot.

Plus they are small enough to fit, the projectors are too deep. And FYI, as far as your suggestion you don't have to use a housing at all, just cut a 2 1/2 inch hole and flush mount your light where you want. I wanted a little more detail to the whole/hole design... GL..

Do those PIAAs have a flange on them? I don't know about just cutting a hole and mounting them. If I did that, then they would only be supported by the thin plastic of the "fake" black vent. I think your idea is better, plus it allows the light to be mounted a bit deeper, rather than flush with surface. I also like the aluminum trim ring idea....gives it a more high-tech classy finish.
