Cracked Windshield

Well, drove the G to Dallas from Memphis and went from 490 miles to over 1600. On the way back a rock chipped the top left of the windshield and made a crack about a foot long.

I called the dealership and they quoted me $752 for an OEM replacement.

Would you guys recommend I go with the OEM replacement or an aftermarket? I hate the thought of replacing it with a non-factory glass, but cost may decide that.

Any suggestions?

I would base your decision on what your insurance deductible is. It should be covered under a comprehensive claim if you have that clause in your insurance. If you don't have it now, add it soon. It normally is relatively inexpensive compared to the liability and collision rates and covers things like hail and other acts of nature, windshields and break-ins.

That being said, I agree with OEM if you can afford it.

Thanks for the replies. I've decided to go OEM on the replacement. I'm just sad I have to outlay $752 so soon for a brand new car . Oh well, it happens!

Funny I would see this thread...

I was home for R&R leave from the sandbox, bought the G, and on the way back to the storage facility to put her away before I got on the plane, a tiny rock hit my windshield and put a small crack in it.

I'm seriously questioning the quality of the glass used in the OEM windshield. I had the chip fixed, but it's still there and I can see it.

Ahh noo, get the highest grade that PPG offers, it's essentially the same as OEM without having to go through Infiniti. It's what I got when I had my replaced. I think it might be even better than OE glass because I haven't had any small rock chips on the windshield yet.

In Florida, if you have comprehensive insurance, the windshield replacement is required at no cost to the insured (no deductible applies). Check your insurance first.

I fully agree. This is the second japanese car I've recently owned and find the windshields are very sensitive to chipping. Even when large water droplets fall on it the sound is not reassuring. I wonder if they use thinner glass panels (the film is sandwiched between them). Every small rock seems to make a significant chip and I'm actually hoping it cracks soon.

I had a PPG windshield used the on my prior car the second time it needed one (the first replacement was OEM). The PPG is very good quality and is actually OEM for many car manufacturers - I believe MB and BMW use them. I personally would go with PPG and my insurance covers all except my comprehensive deductible.

Insurance will cover it with my $1000 deductible hence why I am paying cash. I do not have free windshield replacement come to find out. This is the first cracked windshield I have had in 12 years of driving.

If you guys don't mind, how much did you pay for your PPG/any other non-OEM window?

PPG should be in the 300 range. Infiniti OEM glass will be 700-800. Infiniti OEM is actually PPG.

Just as an FYI, with Geico my glass deductible is $50 for replacement free for chips and what not.
