Another Tint thread - 5% difference

Hi all:

Finally getting tints on my Sedan; I made an appointment for Monday at a well-recommended local shop. They use Solar Gard tint. Anyway, the guy there told me that the installed tints actually measure at 5% lower than the tints are rated at -- in other words, if they install the 40% tints, they read as 35% which is the legal limit in MD.

Anyone ever heard of that? For those of you who say something like you got 25% all around, does that mean you installed 25% tints, or would that mean adding 30% tint resulting in 25?

Thanks,
SM

I had 35% put on the front door glass and 18% put on the rear. When he was done, I had him check the front driver's door glass with his meter. It read 28%. The combination of the 35% film tint and the original Infiniti tint, something like 78%, added together made it 28%.

Yes, you have to take into account the slight factory tint on the glass. I live in MD and just put 45% Carbon on so with factory, put's me around 38%. Just above legal. I wanted to stay legal because I just don't want the hassle.

I see. Perhaps he was referring specifically to my model of car then.

Thanks!

Yeah, he explained it more clearly today to me. It wasn't really a 5% difference, just a combination of two tints like you said. They said they used close to 40% to yeild legal tints here.

So if the factory allows 78% of light to shine through and the installed tints allow 35% you really get 35% of 78%. So .35 * .78 = .273 = 27.3%. So the 28 you said sounds about right.

Wel, got my tints installed. Yay. The car looks much better now -- can't wait to update my pics but I've desperately gotta get a wash in first. Life keeps getting in the way of that.
