lots of people have their windows way darker then what is allowed with their state law. I have 35% 3M carbon tint.
Just my opinion, I dont like tint any darker then 35%. I think it starts taking away from the classy look of the vehicle and gives it more of a ghetto look. All depends what you are going for though...

there are a couple problems about getting the tint darker than the law. When i went they told me if you go darker your going to have trouble passing inspections and i did not want to deal with that. also the owner of the shop is a cop and he said if you get stopped cops will test the windows on the spot and sometimes make u take the tint off on spot or give u a ticket. You know you will get pulled over eventually for something stupid.

35% is the legal limit in VA, I have 20%. No problems so far, but then again my friend who drives a G35 got pulled over for lack of a front plate and aftermarket exhhust. usually they will let you go, but sometimes the cop is just having a bad day :/

the key is you get the front and back windows the legal limit if you dont want tickets if you get stopped and to be able to pass inspection but the key is the rear window in the back you get really dark because thats where the most light comes into the car. there is no way for them to test the way back window so your other windows look darker.

Check your local laws regarding window tint and abide by them. The chances of you getting pulled over and issued a ticket for illegal tint are low, but if you do and are issued a fix-it ticket, it'll be a hassle (from a time and cost perspective) to get it resolved. Do it right (legal) the first time and forget about it. Illinois just passed a law that allows for 35% tint all the way around (minus the front windshield of course) so that's what I opted for. My friends that only had their rear windows tinted, now want to do 35% all the way around after having seen my car. Couldn't be happier with the results.

Definitely...but if you prefer the darker tint and are willing to risk getting a ticket, paying a fine, and being required to fix it, then go for it; afterall, they're not gonna throw you in jail for having illegal tint, so if you want darker, go darker, and just deal with the consequences.

There are good reasons why illegal tints are not a good idea. First, you become a cop magnet as discussed here, subjecting you to other problems up to and including jail (e.g., if you have had one too many beers at that party you’re coming home from); and second, albeit not often mentioned around here, is the safety factor. Partially blinding yourself for night driving is never wise.
