Is it illegal to drive without a rear bumper?

Hey I was wondering if it is illegal to drive without a rear bumper? I will be driving my car to a body shop without a rear bumper for about 5-10 miles. The license plate will be tape to the frame though to be visible at all times.

Since the plastic piece technically isnt the bumper its ok. That is called the bumper cover. The bumper is that big peice of iron frame with the foam sitting on it. You do need the foam attatched though. That foam is what really protects the car. It absorbs the impact.

are you planning on driving without a bumper or bumper cover. i believe it is not illegal in any state to drive without a bumper cover. i know that it is illegal to drive without a bumper (metal frame under the bumper cover) in every state. the cover is a cosmetic piece that has nothing to do with the safety of the vehicle as long as the rear plate is affixed to the back of the car.

ALright thanks for all the info! Yeah I will be driving with no bumper cover. The bumper frame is welded so there is no way for me to drive without that. I will also have the foam intact.

dang, you beat me to the post. however, the foam is not required for safety. the foam is there to support the bumper cover by keeping it from being pushed and dented by minor bumps. the bumper core (metal piece) is required to be there by law.
