Gear shift indicator lights out

While driving home the other night, I noticed the gear shift indicator lights are all out where it says P, D, N, R, +, -

All the lights are out. I had to watch the little screen to make sure which gear I put it into cause I couldn't see the gears cause the lights where burned out near the shift ****. I took it to the dealer today and they said that they don't know what's wrong with it and they would have to disassemble the trim and everything around the shift ****. I didn't have it done cause I'm a little skeptical about having the stuff taken apart from my new car. Everything else is lit up expect those gear indicator lights. They were working last week but now their not. I was wanting to get your guys input on this situation.

BTW I don't know if this is true or not but I was told that the gear lights being out is a sign of a failing transmission cause they use those indicator lights for trouble diagnostic codes for the transmission or TCM or something. True or BS?

BS. They are what they are. Consult 3 is used for diagnostics on late model Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. How about the intrument dimmer switch is it turned down way low? If so try turning it up. If not PRND+- circuit may have an issue. Popped fuse. Bad light cluster. Etc.
