Weight Reduction-Removing sun roof

I am thinking about removing the electric sun roof and replacing the glass with a carbon fiber piece.

Does anybody know if this is even possible or worth it? Does anybody know about how much the glass and motor way?

i dont even think anyone makes a carbon fiber sunroof and i think you would save more weight by removing your spare tire. For those who choose not to get a sunroof, it is generally for structural strength, not weight savings.

The sunroof is heavy and you will save a lot of weight by removing it. I don't know about the feasibility of CF. Taking it out will also lower your center of gravity. As a bonus, you can sell it to someone who didn't get a sunroof.

Take the spare tire out at the track. For every day weight savings, replace the stock seats with some racing style ones, that will save some serious weight without "losing" functionality other than the specific luxury functions of the stock seats. I don't like the look of CF, but if you do, you can do the hood and trunk. There are usually fitment issues with those...
Get some lightweight wheels too.

If you care about weight that much, consider selling the car and starting with a lighter platform..

Otherwise, overcome the weight with more horsepower and suspension work.

Sounds like a pretty stupid idea. You own a luxury car, not a race car. You would have to have the ability to custom fab the CF, you would have to find a way to seal it, you would destroy resale value, and more issues I am sure.

Go buy a 240sx

Yup, going for weight savings in our cars is not a smart idea. Every kg of shaved weight is a kg of lost luxury which you have initially payed for.

How much weight do you expect to shave off? Unless you're turning her into a full track car I say forget about it

+ 1. Horrible idea. The G isn't a miata or a first gen RX-7. For the price of the mods you're talking about doing, just buy a lighter platform and have a project car.

LastChance wants a unique car, not "just another time attack car"

Yes, its pretty easy. Just have a piece fabbed in the same shape/size and bolt it in.

+1

lastchance's previous thread was about converting the G into a timeattack car
with money to back it all up, let him do what he wants, he's on this forum for advice about how to go about it, not whether or not it's feasible. so let's help him out!

im sure the sunroof weighs a good amount. 20+lbs?

You will have serious troubles fabbing it and sealing it.

Hi I just bought M6 can I remove the sunroof and audio system to compete in roadracing? How much weight would I save?

Sometimes I wonder the caliber of chosen ones that buy our car....
