It is not just the paint on the body that is soft. After 1 winter, I already have rust on my front OE rims in the center cap area. Awaiting verdict on warranty.

I just had my car detailed (Blue Slate) and my detailer said that the Infiniti paint on my car was some of the thinnest clear and softest that he'd had ever come across. So much so that I had talked with him how I was looking to debadge and he said if it was his car, he wouldn't risk it as he'd think some of the paint would chip.

A paint specialist I know said the thin clear is pretty much characteristic of any Japanese brand.
Also, the body molding on the sides of the car is not clearcoated.

At least your red may be easy to color match. My blue slate with its pearl/slight metallic flake is a nightmare.

When you try to get it fixed, find a guy in your area that basically does the touch up at several dealers that might also to air brushing. I was lucky to find one and his work is amazing. It might take some effort though.

There are also color kits like Langka but they have a thinner that might strip away our clearcoat so be careful. Not sure about the drcolorship stuff. I always screwed up painting model airplanes as a kid so I don't want to mess with my car.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pissed off about the paint and general lack of quality in the car after only owning for about 7 weeks. Dealers in my area suck. Infiniti doesn't seem to stand behind their product or hold dealers to any standards as defects in workmanship are huge YMMV with the dealers from looking on this site and Infiniti customer service seems to be lip service only.

I had a 1992 Subaru SVX that I had for 15 years and that car held up great. I don't see the G37S I have now holding up as well at all. Love the way it drives but not if it's rattling apart and the paint starts to peel/chip. Sad.

Well I'm in Germany and I picked up my vehicle from the port yesterday. It was raining and the car was filthy, so I could not really check the paint. But today I had a chance to wash it and put a small amount of wax on it, what I found as I was waxing shocked me! In certain spots, it looked like little small water spots. I took it to the dealer (Nissan) and he stated that it looked as if a bird took a crap on the car and no one washed it off and it burned the clearcoat off in those spots. Called Infiniti USA to see if this was a warranty issue. Can't believe how bad the paint is and I have a FX45 and its not this bad, so I am not Nissan or Infiniti bashing. Will give a review of driving the vehicle in a few days. Do any of you guys and gals know if this is a warranty issue?

I just had my car properly detailed and my detailer pointed out 3 or 4 spots on the hood that he said looked like water spots but looked like they were in or under the clear. He is paranoid as to how thin the clear was that he asked if the car had been buffed before.

Please post your experience on the warranty. My gut is they won't do anything.

Due to the changes in VOC, I would think every paint nowadays is soft except Mercedes ceramic paint. We can thank the tree-huggers for that.

I would doubt that Infiniti will warranty paint for damage due to bird crap. If you leave bird crap on any paint long enough, the acid will etch the clear. That being said, it's not a manufacturer's defect but an "act of nature" if you will. Besides, in this economy, I'm sure they'll find every excuse not to pay out on any warrant claims.

Well Infiniti USA is in touch with the Nissan dealer over here, so I'll see where it goes. It's a huge process, it's not just spot fixing the paint and believe me, it must be corrected or the spots will grow, it's like a cancer. I had the same thing happen on a Honda of mine, also I stated it LOOKED like a bird took a crap, I don't really know what it is.

All I know is, its a new car (08) and this should not be happening, sorry, but there are no excuses for that. I have two Infinitis (FX45 and the G37S) and a 1994 Supra Twin turbo, and the Supra does not have a single problem with the paint, so no excuses will be excepted!

I explained to them that fact, and if Infiniti wants to keep us, they need to step up their game or they will lose clients big time. They have GREAT drivers cars, but it's the LITTLE things that keep people coming back, or staying away. San-man, I understand your point about the economy and in a way you are correct. But the flip side of that is, if you don't take care of your clients, you will lose them. You don't have to look far to see what happened to car companies that produced cars with horrible reliability. They (Infiniti) know they have paint issues, there are just to many complaints about this subject, so the ball is in their court.

I agree with you as well about retention of clients, but the economy is unfortunately in the crap-hole and they may use any excuse they legally can to avoid paying/fixing a claim. BMW is (in some cases) forcing owners to wait until 2 they've gone through 2 HPFPs before they replace them with the units that don't have the design flaw. Are they making people pissed off, sure, but it's a sure sign of the times and it'll be that way for a while.

Your 94TT, fortunately for you, is pre-VOC regulation paint, hence it's hardness and lasting looks

Even my 3 series is notorious for having "soft" paint. Luckily for me I didn't buy a black one (they seem to have the worst problems of all the colors). That may be the same for the non-metallic Infiniti paints, where they show the most amount of swirls versus the metallic paints.

Well, I called the dealer and they are open today (surprise to me) so I'll take the vehicle to them and they'll take photos of the problem and send them to Infiniti along with their plan to correct. So lets hope for the best, I'll keep everyone updated.

my only recommendation is paint and repair and then install clear-bra for the front (bumper/hood/mirrors/fenders) and then custom clear-bra for the sides at the wheels.

This would prevent future issues.

I just got a Black 09 G37 Coupe...Ialso own a 07 Porsche Cayman...the G37 paint in soft but the Porsche paint is softer....you can look at it and it scratches..very thin as well. So, its not the Japaneses only that are putting out thin paint..Germans got it too!
