Grom VLine 2 Issues

2012 infiniti g37x

Hey guys, I bought the Grom VLine 2 unit to get carplay in my g37 and it’s been causing me a lot of trouble. These are the issues running into:

(1) the unit seems to be draining my battery. it doesn’t seem to turn off even after i turn the car off and after a couple of days leaves my car completely dead.

(2) the unit just doesn’t seem to work on a consistent basis. it works about 4/5 times and then the car stops detecting the unit. sometimes after i unplug everything and plug it back in, it starts working after a minute or so and other times i just have to leave the car for a night or two and then it works again. then the same cycle repeats of it working 4/5 times and then not working anymore.

(3) the audio stops working after a minute and half to two minutes. the carplay screen still shows up and is responsive, but the audio stops working.

have any of you guys run into any of these issues when installing and is there any sort of fix? or did i just get a bad unit. i’ve been so annoyed, been super excited for carplay and all it’s done is leave me without the g37 for a month or so.

I provided a pretty scathing review of the VLine series over a year ago when the VLine just came out. I was a beta tester for the San Francisco area and the experience soured me to GROM ever since. I had every one of the issues you list plus features they advertised did not function. Steering wheel controls at first were nonexistent, then were unreliable and overall, the unit is a clunky add-on that looks and behaves more like a Nintendo video game than the display of a luxury sport coup. I returned the unit after less than two months and have never looked back. I have lived with my simple setup for my iPhone in my 2008 G37S and am not really looking to improve this as the car is barely driven is seriously being considered for sale. The best advice I could offer would be that there are better options available.

I've had mine installed for probably at least 5 years now. It has improved considerably since they launched and absolutely makes the car feel more modern and usable instead of having to put up with that awful bluetooth connection to try to play music in the car. I have had several issues with mine similar to what it sounds like you are having but I am reasonably sure the issue is with the USB connection of the head unit and not the Vline.

Double check all of the wiring to make sure nothing is broken and shorting out somewhere draining your battery since the unit should only be on when the radio is.

I think your second and third problems are the same thing. Very occasionally I will have to unplug the main harness from the unit to completely restart it but most of the time I only unplug the USB connector and plug it back in to get it to respond again.

Lastly are the firmware and software up to date? I don't check often but I feel like every time I update it there have been noticeable improvements.
