Custom In-dash screen
#17
I have a detailed build log on DIYMA that gets into the tablet stuff starting here: Charliekwin's 2007 G35 Sedan build log - Page 3 - Car Audio | DiyMobileAudio.com | Car Stereo Forum
Short version:
- Figure out a way to mount the tablet. I used the back of a snap-on cover and bolted that to the stock screen brackets.
- Extend the wiring harness for the screen.
- Make a new bezel for the relocated screen using materials you're comfortable working with (MDF and body filler for me. 3D printing would be cool!).
- Shape and sand for days.
- Make a new shift trim piece (the stock screen is slightly wider than the ashtray, so there's a gap with the stock piece).
- Wrap everything with Scotchprint vinyl so it all matches.
There's a fair amount of work involved.
If I were to do it all again, I might consider leaving the stock screen as is and moving the HVAC controls down to the ashtray area. That would leave room to put a larger tablet right in the middle where the CD player is now. The 7" screen is usable, but just barely. An 8"+ would be a huge improvement. The radio and CD player would be lost, but I've used them precisely zero times since completing the project and wouldn't miss them.
