Radar & Laser Detectors?

I have escort passport 8500 x50 hardwired. It's a catcher! It has detected COPS miles away. Been saving my A$$ for a while now. I highly recommend it and I know a nice way to mount it w/o using the glass cups. LMK...
I bought mine used for $130 on CL. You might be lucky to find one cheap as well. Good Luck!

I also have a Passport 8500. I have had it for over 4 years and it has paid for itself a few times over. It is great at picking up radar but the laser beam has to hit it dead on and by them it's usually too late. I live in MD where laser speed cameras abound and it will start to pick those up just in time for you no slam on the brakes. But if a cop has the gun onyou, fuggetaboutit. It is useful in VA where they rely on radar more than laser. Even if i lay it on the center console, it picks them up with plenty advanced notice.

I believe Fezzik made a write up about installing a radar detector in his rear view mirror, it's so stealth and sick, maybe a little advanced for what you're looking for but it's worth knowing the potential of radar detectors and how helpful they can be

V1, after you have one, you will never have anything else. They are costly, but it will save you more than you know.
I have a bike as my transport atm and i rarely do the speed limit. I just learn where to look and have adapted to know how cops think and work. Your own eyes and judgement will most likely save you more, but a radar is a very nice backup =).

It all matters how much you like the skinny pedal. A detector can be much cheaper than a single ticket and the insurance increase, plus the potential for revocation after getting a few. By far the most widely used band is the Ka band, which is probably thirty-year-old tech by now, so even a cheaper unit from a quality brand (even used) will save you most of the time. It makes sense to check what they use in your area. But if you always drive it like you stole it, pay the big bucks. Some detectors warn you when approaching red light cameras as well. If you have a G coupe and are asking the question, I'm guessing you think of speed limits as suggestions rather than laws, so it will probably be worthwhile to you. Once you pay that first ticket, you'll realize that money could have instead bought the detector, and saved you both money and points, plus would continue to save you both money and points.

Interesting that this topic came up when it did. After 12 years of driving, I got my first ticket last week. The trooper informed me he was using a LIDAR (laser).
I was looking at the Escort 9500ix, anyone have any experience as to how good it is at detecting laser?

^From what I understand, lasers are instant and the best detector will not get you out of a speeding ticket if the cop has you gunned. They will generally gun your license plate since it is reflective, or if you don't have a front plate, then your headlights. The only way to "defeat" a laser is with a jammer, usually mounted in the front bumper that disrupts the normal laser pattern and causes a non-read on the gun. Laser jammers are illegal in some states.
