Amp, sub, speakers.
I had the same problem....and tried this which seamed to work.
1. Turn off speed varying volume.
2. Turn off driver soundstage
That seemed to make it a little louder.

I went and saw my buddies at R&D audio, they added a 5 channel JL hybrid series amplifier and a 8 inch w7 in a box. Amplified the factory highs and mids and the bose sounds amazing!!!! The key is to get a good quality amplifier and a quality interface and it will rock! Promise you

I also kept the driver sound stage. That's the speaker in the middle of the dash it's kind of a center channel you should keep that on because you are adding more sound. I don't know what yeah you have but if you have the AV jack you will have twice the sound. I have the first gen Apple TV hooked up in my car your can use a iPod dock or the wires that have the AV jacks to 30 pin connector. Don't use the iPod interface that came with the car. For some reason cd's and the iPod interface have a volume limiter so it's not gonna be loud but the AV jacks have no limit you are gonna lose the feature if seeing your playlist and controlling the iPod but If you want sound then use the AV jacks
( my system Apple TV and a single 10" Rockford sub)
If you add a sub set your interior bass to the middle and adjust the sub amp volume if you need more you are going to have bass over kill if you turn the bass up in the radio.

Using the AV jacks on the car and the headphone jack on the iPood/iPhone allows the iDevice to amplify the signal first and adjust the over all gain (using the volume slider). Great for getting it louder, but more equalizer and amplifier non idealities are introduced in this method.

I wish we could install aftermarket head units in the G. Though the factory unit is sufficient for decent control/sound quality, there's still a ton to be heard. Having great speakers is limited by out factory unit.

The driver sounds stage does not activate/deactivate the center channel. It adjusts L-R relative phase and eq to impart a more balanced sound stage for the uncentered listening position.

An amp and sub is the easiest/cheapest/most noticeable. I still have the stock BOSE audio with a 10" Alpine Type R sub and with the windows rolled down, the volume is only up not even half way and it's plenty loud. It's really the low end that's lacking.
