Why doesn't my portable GPS work with the car outlets?
It worked fine in my old car. Usually the battery power on those portable GPS units are crap so most of the time you have to plug it in the car outlets while you use it.
When I tried doing plugging it in my G37 with the one outlet near the shifter, my GPS said it was a USB connection and wouldn't go past that screen so I connected it to the one in the armrest and it worked fine for 2 weeks but now that outlet says it's a USB connection. WTF? ANybody have similar problems because I don't want to buy a new one and have the same problem. I just don't get it.
And please no one say "you should have got the navigation" because I would rather spend $100 on a portable one than a couple of thousand for Nav where it basically does the same thing. Except now of course.

What make of GPS is it?
What year is your G37...does it have a USB port?
My suggestion, if possible, is use a GPS USB cable plugged into the car USB port and see if that keeps it charging. Of course this depends on your answers to my 2 questions.
Will your car outlets still work properly for other devices and the lighter?

It's a Magellon and about 6 or 7 years old but had no issues with it in my old car in the summer. Unfortunately I have no idea where the manual is so I can't troubleshoot it that way. I do have a USB port as well so I'll try that. I haven't plugged anything else to see if it's working properly but I'll try the USB cable idea and hope it works because I don't have another charging cable. If not then I guess I'll mention it to the dealer when I go get my oil change. Kinda sucks because I need it for my job so I have to go old school and use an actual map book for now. BTW how do these book thingys work? You just open them up and leaf thru the pages right?
Thanx for the help guys.

Looks like i may have to as I used a USB cable and it still showed the same screen as before. Funny thing is when it's on battery power it works fine but it's time for a new one anyways just for the updates. Thank god they are much cheaper now than when they came out. I couldn't find one for less than $300 back then.

If the 12V socket is putting out 12V with proper polarity, there is nothing the dealer can do about your gps.
If your gps is 6-7 years old, it could very well be on its last legs. Have you CONFIRMED it works properly in a different car?
There are 2 types of usb cables, charging and data. The latter makes use of 2 additional pins in the cable, and the device is usually able to differentiate between the two types. My nuvi 7x5 for example will go into data mode if I attempt to use a usb port with a non charging usb cable.
