Detector options...

So, I'm moving to VA at the end of October and decided to invest in a radar detector that doesn't have a leaky oscillator and has a remote install to keep things clean. I was considering the Bel STi-R Plus, but the 9500ci is actually cheaper at $900 and at least includes some form of laser shifter, if basic and flawed. Not to mention it has a voice I can stand, alarms I can stand, and a blue display that generally "flows" with the car better (not that any of this is exactly important... more form than function). Any opinions would be appreciated, and I'll throw a poll in here for good measure.

Which reminds me, I'm probably going to get rid of my 9500ix sometime around mid-September, so if anyone in the San Diego area is looking to pick one up on the cheap, PM me and we'll get together, and I'll even demo it for you etc.

Las Vegas becomes LV when abbreviated. Virginia.

Just making sure because your Location says Vegas/San Diego.

Do not forget that Radar Detectors are illegal in Virginia.

I'm considering it for usage in Maryland, of course! (likely story)

you will need either the sti-r, sti-r plus or window mount sti - driver. I did the sti-r plus with band segmetation and rdr. Its been great.

voltic.. You sent me a pm about the install. here is the thread on it

Also the sti-r plus blows away the 9500ci. You are also forced with the zr4 laser shifters with the 9500ci which are not good. LI is the way to go if you can.

The sti-r plus is also radar roy's favorite

Thanks for the link! Yeah I noticed the STi-R Plus is a bit better because of the dual antennas and Ka segmentation to cut sweep times down, but in all of the tests I've seen, the 9500ci alerts at maybe 1/4 second later, and that's with segmentation enabled on the Bel.

So I guess what my question is, is it really worth it to go with the STi-R Plus and pay the premium on a brand new system that you can't find an open box or used deal on ($1150) or pick up a 9500ci which has nearly as good performance while still maintaining RDD invisibility, and at least have some laser protection, mediocre as it may be ($900)?

be careful as well when picking up the 9500 ci for cheaper at other sites. If you buy from a place that is not an authorized reseller you void your warranty. Just a heads up..

I think Forged performance is selling 950ci. You should PM them for price.

I'll give them a shot but I doubt they can match that. Also I don't think Escort/Bel has an actual "authorized" list, so much as they do an "unauthorized" blacklist. Beach Camera in NJ?

When I was dong research a year ago before buying the 9500ix, everything I read said the 9500ix was more sensitive compared to the 9500ci. If I remember correctly there was a dude that made a youtube video that compared the two at the same time in the same car.

The 9500ix is not more sensitive than a 9500ci. It's sensitivity is pretty much unmatched until you start talking about the STi-R and STi-R Plus, which have band segmentation advantages. It's built on the same platform and waveguide as the STi-R series though. I ended up picking up the 9500ci since I got a great deal compared to the Bel, and I don't need much more sensitivity than my 9500ix already has since I don't really go anywhere where they know how to use Q/T.

Unauthorized resellers are everywhere. You need to call bel to see if they are authorized to sell it.
