A new spin on the age old "Adding Navigation" thread

Hey All -

So I pick up my 2011 G25 (yes 25) this week. Unfortunately it does not even have the option of Nav, so I'm just going to add it.

Based on the FSM for the car it appears the only difference between the nav and non-nav car is the control box directly below the screen and the radio tuner its-self behind the dash, then obviously the GPS antenna.

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/G37/Sedan/2009/AV.pdf

Pp. 351 for Nav car vs. Pp. 12 for non-nav car.

I could care less about the bypasses and hacks, I just want nav.

Opinions would be great, and if someone who has done this before could comment on any unexpected issues I'm not thinking of at the moment.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I'm pretty sure that nobody here has added nav to a non nav car yet. So you'll be the first on this forum. That means it's up to you to fill us all in on how the project goes. Best of luck, looking forward to updates.

The console control panel is different for nav-equipped vehicles. There are a quite a few extra buttons dedicated to nav functions, so you'd need to get that as well, and the wiring harnesses likely have a lot more going also...good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement y'all.

I'm an MECP Advanced Installer (which doesn't mean a whole lot to be honest) but I have over 5 years of install experience, and am a specialist with OEM integration.

I did multiple non-nav -> OEM nav setups on Ford and Lincoln products, as well as a host of older german cars. My crowning achievement is getting OEM Navigation to play well with Sync in a non-nav car.

After doing a lot of digging it appears that the system *should* be pretty plug & play with all the necessary equipment. Needles to say I'm all over the G37 part out. Because the G25 is such a new model I cannot find any wiring diagrams or the FSM online to be certain.

Either way I'll make sure to take lots of pictures and a detailed "how to" if I can get it to work.

I'm sure there are plenty of other 12v experts here, but I'll throw it out there I'm pretty dangerous and good for questions.

FYI there's a guy parting out an entire G37 with nav in the classifieds, I was looking at his screen in case I screw up my current project (more to follow on this project in a different thread), but anyway, he still had the screen, you might see if he still has the rest of the parts.

Yeah I put up a post in his thread, I'm going to PM here shortly. I do believe he still has everything necessary to make it work.

This might be good for people wanting to upgrade the older NAV unit to the new higher res screen also.

Is the screen actually higher resolution or is the unit just pushing higher resolution graphics to it?

So the screen is indeed higher resolution? Hmmmmm, I'll need a new one of those as well. Its no biggie, those are really easy to replace.

this would be very surprising seeing as the 07-08 G35s are *not* plug and play at all, which is why i added my own touchscreen and computer. if the G37s are P&P though this will make me very happy for future upgrades!

Help me out as to why the 08 -> 09+ are not P&P? I do not have the FSM to Gs of that age, just 09 and up.

Having been in a 2010 with the higher res screen, I have to say i prefer the UI on the 08-09. It's not as sharp, but stuff is layed out better.

Sort of out of topic, but I've added Garmin's GVN53 blackbox to integrate my 08 base model g37 to have NAV capabilities.
