How to play movies via USB

I wrote this up in another thread and thought it would be helpful to have it as a standalone post.

Here are the steps you would need to follow to convert existing movies to be able to be played via the USB port.

  1. Download Xvix here (find the right one for your computer)
  2. You will need to have a DIVX codec installed on your computer - if you are able to play movies, chances are you are all set. If not, download one (I'd suggest the CCCP or you can download just the DIVX Codec here.)
  3. Go to the install directory (default is C:\Program Files\Xvid) and run the file called AviC.exe
  4. Hit the [...] button to browse for your movie file.
  5. Set the second box to DIVX and hit Apply
  6. Now, copy this file onto a thumb drive (or in my case a Solid State Hard Drive) and put it into your USB drive in your car. Make sure your parking brake is on, and you should be good to go.

This is the 64gb SSD USB drive that I use:
Newegg.com - A-DATA S596 Turbo AS596TB-64GM-C 2.5" 64GB USB 2.0 & SATAII Internal / External Solid State Drive (SSD)

Hope that helps!

Hey MiniRX7,

Didn't mean to poach your thread - I probably should have searched the forums a bit more, but I didn't notice anything like this around before. I figured something like this would have been stickied.

I hooked up my 2tb drive initially (it has several hundred movies in all different formats). It will display all on the screen without a problem, however when you go to play them, it will say something like "unrecognized format". It appears that only Divx is a recognized format - anything else won't play. Reading through the manual last night, it also appears that they say only the Divx codec is recognized. I did find out that the raw files from a Cisco Flip HD video camera play just fine...

I tried to use an SSD HD as well 64gig, but the system seems to forget that it has connect to it before, and then resets.

Going back to 16gig USB stick instead.
