Is there a way to use any other players or trick the car into thinking an external hard drive is an ipod? I really hate overpriced Apple and it's DRM nonsense and the iPod I do have is only 4 gigs... is there a way to use a different player or anything?

 

If you are using the iPod connection, no. If you are using the RCA cables, then I think you can use pretty much whatever you want

But you can get an older version 120GB video iPod for not much at all...why not just get one of those? They aren't overpriced in any way

 

Yes there should be a RCA-to-(player of your choice) cable that you can find.

I have the RCA to 3.5MM deal, I use that right now for my Droid. I was thinking about the data connection so I can use the steering wheel controls, etc...

Here’s another question. Can video be played over the data connection? Or do I need to get an iPod proprietary (BS) to RCA composite video to play video on the screen? Any way to override the nanny state video cut off when driving?

You can't play video over data connection on the G, it doesn't have a video player/decoder.. Search online for Apple RCA cable.
I got a SD card to CF card adapter and a 16GB SD card for less than $50. That solved my music quality problem. I'll wait for the price of 32GB card go down a little bit before I get one.
