NAV doesn't show names of upcoming major cross streets

OK, I suspect that this may be a Canada map problem as many maping and GPS systems have way less detail on the Canadian side of the border than on the US side--hopefully some of you can confirm. If not, the NAV is incredibly stupidly designed.

When travelling, say on a "brown" major road, upcoming "brown" major cross streets are not labelled consistently. I would say about 5% of the time, there will be a brown label on them to tell you what the street name is. This despite the sea of name labels on all the smaller streets in the area.

When travelling on an expressway (red), upcoming exits and/or roads or highways with an interchange are also not labelled! So I can see a bunch of irrelevant small streets that I can't get to because I am on a limited-access highway, but the roads that have exits are not labelled.

I was only in the US for a few hours and it was when the car was brand new so I wasn't paying much attention to the NAV, but I don't recall this behaviour there.

Please confirm (I hope for all you US customers' sake) that this is a peculiarity of the incompetent and incomplete mapping service on this side of the border.

That is the same in the US. If you don't need to see the map you can go to Info, and Where Am I. It will tell you the next street you will hit and the last street you pasted.

So what kind of ridiculous design is this, then? That dozens of meaningless sidestreet names are constantly displayed, but the only thing you normally care about (other than knowing the street you are driving on!), the upcoming cross streets or exits, are not labelled?

I've only noticed that in very rural areas that I drive through. 99% of the streets (major and minor) that I go on are all labeled correctly

I know this may sound silly... but have you tried zooming the map in closer?

zooming closer will show less detail...zooming out is ur better bet...

but same thing for us in the west coast..hahaha i noticed that the first day i took my infiniti out after years of using aftermarket navi's

if you want to see street names you need to zoom in...I usually use it at 1/4 mile and I hardly ever have names not come up

So aftermarket ones are properly designed to show upcoming cross streets (as the priority)? Sorry, haven't used one, but the Infiniti one is staggeringly useless as a basic map in its current form.

I can't tell from your two responses if you read my initial post? All major upcoming cross streets/roads and exits are labelled on your NAV? Because on mine, everything EXCEPT those are labelled. Problem is, it should be the other way around.

yeah I did, sorry if my responses were confusing!!

on my Nav, set at 1/4 mile, all major streets, exits, etc (pretty much everything except VERY small side streets) is labled as I approach it.

Sometimes I zoom out to 1 or 2 miles just to see the general direction I am going to be heading (but then usually only highways are labled)

sorry again if I was confusing earlier

yea, i have a garmin in my other car...and it always shows on top which street is coming up next....including all the small streets, etc....

and when i zoom in all the way, i can't see any street names especially the street i'm travelling on (sometimes a small street i can see)....once i zoom out 1 or 2 levels, i can see the street i'm on, or the upcoming street (just the beginning letters of the street)...

i think canada and usa have different map details.....because when i go to seattle, i don't recall having this problem....

Well then something is wrong with mine or I have it set wrong. I have attempted to adjust all the settings possible to correct this, but I still get everything BUT the major cross streets and exits. Hmmm...very annoying!

Apparently others have NAV's in their G's that work properly....any ideas what we should do? I really cannot believe it is that stupidly designed given the attention to detail shown in the rest of it (clouds and stars, easy user interface, good cartographic design, etc.).
