If you're in the market for something reliable but not costly, look into a Passport 8500 X50... They run about $300 brand new, but you can easily get a good deal on a refurbished one on buy.com or amazon.

I agree on the Passport, too. I have had one for a few years and it has saved me a bunch of times. I also had it hard-wired for about $50. It has paid for itself many times over.

I've been through 3 top of the line (at the time) Escort Passports. 2 of them ended up having "service required" flash on the screen after a few years.

Bought a Valentine 1 and never looked back. Its a night and day difference...Especially with the arrows.

And they have updates for I think 50 bucks to bring it to a new level when it becomes old, great product.

+1 on the Passport 8500 x50 - a very effective radar detector in NY state for the way the police operate here.

The Passport 9500 adds gps and an adaptive location based filter - so if you trip a false alarm frequently in the same location it will eventually learn and block the false alarm - also adds warnings for traffic cameras from a database.

My sense is that these are the two best you can get before going to the next step and adding laser blocking hardware which I think costs >$1000.

I have never had a V1 - I know some people swear by them - but I have found the Passports to be very good solutions for me.

I still don't understand why V1 is still making them one ugly a * s * s * radar.
Granted they're the BEST money can buy in terms of protection. This tells you that ppl prefer protection over ugly.

My suggestion is that you try to save more money and get high end one. Over $300 or so. There are many reviews on varies models so it's hard to tell you which model is the best for the price range.

I also suggest that you buy from authorized dealer so that they're covered by warranty.

No warranty - cheaper, risk try ebay
Warranty - authorized dealer

V1 does not work well for city driving.. it's good for open roads.

the best "affordable" RD right now is escort passport 9500ix ..... $500... best in the market right now. The next level will be $1000... that's why i said the best "affordable".

try doing some research here and u'll know what im saying http://www.radardetector.net/forums/
