I ordered a refurb 120gig Classic from the apple store for $189 today. It has a 1yr warranty, and I think it's a gen6. I'll test it when I get it. And I just remembered my wife has a big early ipod kicking around. It has a smooth wheel, but no video. I'll test that one in the meantime.

I've had it happen a handful of times, but I dont have to disconnect or anything...it just says "no ipod connected" for like 1-2 seconds then the last song that was playing when the car was turned off comes up and keeps going

so why do u think sometimes when the ipod is connected and you turn the car on it says "ipod not connected" does this mean there is something wrong with the connection in the car or is it a computer flaw sometimes?

with mine the only thing i can think of is that the ipod takes longer to "wake up" and turn on than the car does to boot up the audio system. however if its saying it isnt connected to the point that you have to unplug it and reconnect it, then there might be a small disconnect or something, im not 100% sure

Quick update, the 5th gen "classic" still has issues shutting down, but, the current 160 gig classic works fine, with Scoche adapter.
My conclusion, after testing every iPod Classic model I could get my hands on, is that *some* iPods do not acknowledge "ignition off", others do. I do not think it is all the fault of the G37, as it does work with most iPods. The later models seem to work, but, require an adapter. Test car was a mid-year 2009 sedan.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gen Nano's use firewire charging and will charge with the Infiniti supplied cable. 4th and 5th gen Nano's would need an aftermarket cable I assume to do the USB charging. I researched this thoroughly before buying my 2nd Gen Nano. Unfortunately the 2nd gen does not shut off when the car does. I'll have to look and see if there is a sleep mode for it.

Just bought a 7th Gen 160GB iPod Classic. BestBuy had it for $228 and with 10% Bing cashback it came to about $206 + tax, so jumped on this deal rather than getting a used one on craigslist for $140.

It charges and sleeps just fine without any additional adaptors. I really like the overall user experience and the fact that I have at the moment about 40GB of music without having to switch CF cards.

Yep.

I have the 5th Gen classic 30GB, also known as the "iPod Video." Charges fine but also does not shut itself off after the car is turned off. It doesn't even go into sleep mode several minutes later like it does when unplugged. It just stays on all night unless I shut it off manually.

Which, of course, I never remember to do.

FourT2, could you please confirm that your iPod Classic, 7th gen can charge from the G37 iPod cable without an addaptor? I thought most later models require USB voltage?

Yep, not only charges, but sleeps too when you turn the ignition off. 7th Gen is part # MC297LL/A. I've been using it for two days and it's been awesome so far.

As a help to other members, the 7th gen iPod Classic works perfectly for me. I tried a lot of iPod models, testing etc. It's got to be the software in some iPods? My fix was just to use the 7th gen Classic. Doesn't need an adaptor, has worked, charged and shut down correctly for me.
