remote starter $1000!!!!!?????
ok first off sorry if this is in the wrong section i didnt know whether to put it in tech, modding, or electronics...
anywho I went to future shop today to price out a remote starter for my car. I priced out Nordic ($250), Compustar ($250), and Viper ($220). I gave them my info about the car and about 20 mins later the roll up red in the face. They said to buy and install would be AT LEAST $1000, they didnt even gimme a cap or anything! I was in awe, i said youve gotta be kiding me ..... so i went to another two stores and they all gave me dam near the same price with no cap . It gets really cold in the prairies of saskatchewan, like -50 so i would really like a remote starter for those nice -25 to -30 days. I dont drive my car if it gets past -30 unless its an emergency. So my question is has anyone had any experience with remote starters. I know ppl have gotten oem ones installed at the stealerships but im sure the range in minimal. From my building at the university is a good 15 min walk to my parking spot so i would need a pretty long range starter, like 5000ft! Any input or advice would be killer.

Damn, that's nuts. Wonder if it has anything to do with the keyless go. As far as starting the car almost a mile away, i'd be worried someone would try to jump in it or something. It'd be funny if you started it up from that far and someone was next to it with no one around, they'd be trippin out wondering how the hell your car started.

My dealer said $500, $1000 seems high but then again you are in Canada so not sure how it relates there. Actually just read your 5000ft remark, you going to need something more advance than what you're looking at cause those are not going to get anywhere near there. Probably something that integrates with an in-car cell phone.

I might havta invest......
oh theres 5 ginos here in canada!
on a side note my friends friend is a electrical engineer who just sucessfully made some starter that involves his Blackberry. U just send a text to ur car and it starts, stops, unlocks, and a few other gimmicks like trunk popin n windshield wipers. Kinda cool so maybe that will soon be in production and thad be !

I had compustar alarm (2wss, if i remember correctly) whiched included remote start and turbo timer installed on my old car . . . total was definitely less than 1g. Prob around the neighborhood of 500~700 usd.

Dang. The remote start on my truck was $75 from circuit city and has 4 auxillary outputs as well as a turbo timer, alarm, controls the door locks, and the ability to plug in to the gird heaters. Took about 8 hours to install it with a buddy's help. Dang sure wasn't $1000 or even remotely close to that.

I was quoted $950 at 6Ave Electronics, $700 at another installer per NJlakeshoreG recommendation for a Viper 5901. Clifford Max 50.7 was quoted at a bit below $500 (special price for forum member).
I would have to go with the $700. The installer seems to have a special bypass module which allow me to start my car remotely, open the door, push the start button, apply the brake and drove away. With the Clifford installer, I start my car remotely, the car will shut off when I open the door, get in the car and start the car with the push button. As for the 6Ave, I don't like the technician attitude. He is rude when I ask some questions. It seems that he doesn't want to install my car.
