Can't figure out how to fast forward

I did a search and a previous post recommended holding down the next track button to fast forward a song playing on an iPod. The problem is I can't figure out where the next track button is other than the one on the steering wheel which does not seem to work the way they describe.

I don't have the Nav option, is this my problem?

Its the same button you use to fast forward the track, Press it once.

Use these (two buttons between the analog clock and the tuning ****-See image ) buttons to forward or rewind the songs regardless of their source. The buttons on the steering wheel will let you skip the folder/album when you hold them down long enough. In my experience however, holding down the ones on the steering wheel doesn't trigger any function when the Ipod is playing. Hope this helps.
