The problem is not the composite AV cable. Maybe if he tries playing a MOVIE from the AV cable, the audio will go through.. but if he's just trying MUSIC:
he needs to get a cable with AV on one end, and the other end goes into his phone HEADPHONE jack.

The music will still come through, video or not. I have done it. Pretty much everyone has if they tried playing a video on their screen without having the e-brake engaged. Same goes for being able to play music videos through your ipod connector. You will hear the music but will not have any video.

Yes i know the audio will play through, i use it myself for my cell phone.. but i believe that the iphone is different. I wouldn't really know though, because i have a regular ipod connector.

Thank you guys very much for your responses.. I bought the cable in computer USA.. It connects to the red white and yellow(RCA); into the port where my iPhone is being charged(identical too the first pic on top of this page).. Do u think if I exchange this cable for one that connects to the top headphones hole(the picture under the 1st picture), it will play my music??where can I purchase the composite cables you guys are using with your iPhone 3gs? So I can stop having to deal with the pain of not being able to play music on my car?? Thanks guys!!

OH! i think i know whats wrong. get a RCA to headphone jack cable, rather than the one you have now. I think what yours is for is to display video? Connect the 3 colored ends to the AUX in the center armrest, and the other end goes to your headphone out on your iphone 3gs.
That should solve your problem.

Just get it from the Apple store or Best Buy. Where ever you get it from, just make sure it's the Apple brand cable. But you could just go to radioshack and get the headphone-to-RCA cable instead and save $40 (assuming you don't care about video)!
