iPhone Hookup

iPhone Hookup
I was wondering if anyone has had experience hooking up their iPhone to the iPod cord... My question basically is this: Can it act as both an iPod and hooked via BT to the car at the same time?

Yes, after pairing the Iphone with your G37 you can then plug the Iphone into the Ipod connector and play the music through the stereo. When you receive an incoming call your music will pause and the phone system in the car will ring. Its pretty awesome. Also, if you get a text message you will hear a brief tone and the music will lower.
Where does everyone keep their Iphone when they have it plugged into the car? Do you keep it in the center console? I find it to be a pain in there because if you receive a text you need to open the console and pull out the phone.

Anyone know if there is a way to push your phone book contacts from the Iphone to the G37 phone system?
I don't know why infiniti developed the system the way they did. The system will accept contacts that are pushed via bluetooth from your phone, however, most phone manufacturers do not allow this capability. I have the Iphone, a Blackberry 8800, and a Motorola KRZR and none of them are capable of pushing my contacts.
Anyone have a jailbroke Iphone and know if there has been an app developed to allow you to push contacts?

Well that stinks.
It also stinks that infiniti doesnt give you the option to manually enter the phone #'s to the system and rather need to do just the voice entry. Id prefer to be able to enter on my own then so when i have incomiing call i dont need to look at my iphone to see which contact is calling me. (I dont have everyone's phone # memorized.)

because of this, i've gotten in the habbit - when no passengers are in my car - that i set my phone in the gap produced by extending the passenger leg support one click. it fits pretty snuggly in there for easy access.

Yeah, I leave my phone in the cupholder so I can look down and its within easy reach for me. Ive even come to the realization that its easier and quicker for me to call people from the contacts list of my iphone as opposed to pressing the button on the steering wheel and going through the menus. As soon as I hit the dial button it is transferred to my car stereo.
Its just a pain that for a 40,000$ automobile you still have to resort to other measures.

If you think about it, Infiniti using OBEX was the most simplistic way to allow contact xfer accross the board. Otherwise, the engineers would have had to procure and test all different types of phones and firmwares to ensure proper xfer... Which isn't very economical on their part.

Agreed, but theres a large # of smartphones which don't have this capability. The Iphone and Blackberry probably have the majority of the market for PDA phones between the two of them and neither of them support OBEX to push contacts via Bluetooth.

Just looked up some statistice. 69% of the market share for smartphones is owned by RIMM and Apple. 48% to RIMM and 21% to Apple.
According to ATT statistics the majority of their customers are going with integrated smart devices as opposed to standard cell phones today.
Heres a question though - If I happened to find a phone that allows OBEX, is there a way that I can import my contacts to the system and then use them with the Iphone?

Ok, answered my own question by calling Infiniti Bluetooth Support.
Infiniti does not offer a shared phone book solution on their vehicle. You can pair up to 5 phones(I think thats the #) and each phone would have its own phone book.
There is a work around to this problem though - If you have another phone that supports the pushing of contacts through OBEX, you can pair that phone with your car and push all of your contacts to the car. Once completed you would then pair your Iphone with the car and instead of saying pair new phone you would tell the system to replace the other phone. At this point the car would then replace the existing phone but keep the existing phone book. You must make sure to remove your Iphone from the pairing list before proceeding with these steps.
I'm going to attempt to try this out when I get home tonight or tomorrow. Going to borrow a phone from work and see if this statement was correct. The Infiniti tech was pretty certain this is correct though.

EDIT: ^ There you go. I did not know the second part you mention was possible... I am fairly certain that my other phone supports OBEX, so I may have to give this a shot!

Ok, so I used an old motorola phone that supported obex and was able to import my contacts to the car. The only thing is that it is still just purely a phone book where I record my name and only the phone # themselves are imported to the system. The text name does not get transferred over to the car so when there is an incoming call it still just displays the mobile # on the screen and unless you know who's # it is or look at your phone you are SOL.
Is this the same for the Navi system? Sad to say but I kinda hope so because thta is one feature of the navi package that I would have cared to have. I have Navi on my Blackberry an music from my Iphone so no need for GPS or hard drive built into the car. But actual text based phone book would have been worth the extra money.

I'll sum it up for you... OBEX will transfer name/number to the vehicle, and the name will appear on the screen... "when the vehicle is stopped"
As far as using one phone that has OBEX and transferring everything over then jumping over to the iphone, you can't do it. I've done this numerous times (albeit between two Windows Mobile phones) and I have to re-transfer all numbers and/or record voicetags.
One important thing I realized however, is that I call the same 10 people all the time... and although it is a pain initially, it is not really too bad to just program them into the car manually, voicetag and all...
Good luck. BTW, I don't think the iPhone 3G has OBEX enabled either... gotta love Apple for trickling down the features to keep you buying...reminiscent of Microsoft in a way...

Ok, well I used an ATT motorola KRZR with OBEX to transfer my #'s. I would go into the phonebook of the car, add contact, record the name, and then say transfer #. I would then go to the contact on the KRZR and send via bluetooth. It would then say - you have imported +1 234 567 8910. Then it would ask if I would like to record another # for this contact. At which time I would say no. At no point would I see the name of the contact transferred from the phone to the vehicle. Is this because the KRZR would not transfer the # or because the non-navi system does not import the name over OBEX? And yes my vehicle was in park in my driveway while doing this.
Also, as per the Infiniti Tech, I then went into the phone setup, said replace a phone, then paired the Iphone again in place of the KRZR in spot 1. At this time the phone book contact recordings and #'s were transferred. Mar- are you adding the 2nd phone as a seperate phone or replacing the original phone? If you are replacing the address book does transfer.
Also, can you confirm if you have the NAVI system or not? Perhaps I am not able to transfer the name and number via OBEX because I do not have Navi package.
Can you list the steps you follow to get the name/# to transfer to the vehicle? Perhaps I am following an incorrect step.
