Aftermarket head unit for the G37
Has anyone installed an aftermarket head unit in their G37? I came up with the idea of getting a unit that has a detachable face plate. Then link the face plate to the unit by a set of wires (ribbon, cat5, etc) so that the faceplate could be installed separate from the head unit. That way the head unit could go inside the glove box, trunk, etc and the faceplace could control the head unit "remotely". After looking around on the web, some people have already done this, but they had different cars that were more forgiving as far as placement goes. I still don't know where could I place the face plate while hiding it out of view. I was thinking to mount it flush on the sun visor, or put it in the sunglass compartment, but that would block the rear view mirror. I don't know if relocating the rear view mirror would be an option, I would only need a couple more inches. Another place could be the compartment right behind the shifter. Any ideas from someone who has attempted something like this on their G's? Thanks in advance.

Why not keep the stock head unit and replace everything after it? A good stereo shop should be able to give you the sound you are looking for and keep the stock look to deter thives.
Besides, if you replace the stock unit you loose a lot of functionality with the screen and controls. I think this car makes it very difficult and impractical to change the headunit without completely redesigning the center stack.
Just my opinion though.....

i dont know if this is gonna help but i had my shop take a look at my G and what he suggested was to go behind the screen and install a switch then run it to another unit in the trunk and allow switching between the two units by the middle "ghost" button in between the two heated seat buttons. This was gonna be for me to run a carputer in the G. Opinions?

interesting. the only thing I see with that is the video quality of the actual screen is kinda bad. test it out by hooking up a ps2 to it. horrible.
