Before the car is shut off, I can just hit the back button to go back to the track list, album, artist, etc. Once the car has been restarted, hitting the back button only takes me to the "main menu" where I have to scoll all the way back down to the artist.
Yep, another one of those annoying nav/iPod interface problems that doesn't make any sense. You don't have to turn the car off for this to happen either. If you use the nav system for other stuff and then go back to the iPod, it usually dumps you back at the top of the artist list.

Now THIS is exactly the kind of solution I was looking for. Swapped out all of my genre fields for the first letter of the artist name, and now I can finally pick tunes without scrolling through 100 pages of artists. Thanks!
