I'm surprised cars as new the '14 are still using a mechanical drive. Flash memory has proven to be quite reliable. Also stored data doesn't get changed too often.

Also expensive back when these headunits were originally built. If these were "redesigned" in 09, then they probably finalized the design around 07? That's close to 10 years ago. Flash memory was far from mainstream.

I'm wondering since I have a non-Nav unit if I can use the Nav unit image and maybe get the updated GUI that you guys have. I know the nav function won't work which is totally fine. I think the screen resolutions between the two models are different however.

Ok. I have some good news and some bad news...

Good news:
After 30 minutes and 60$ spent, i got the US spec unit HDD unlocked and i made a image from it.
The G37x US version HDD image with 2012 navigation version on it is available HERE

Bad news:
The US spec unit don't work with SSD.
I use a KingSpec IDE SSD.
The same SSD that work's just fine on EU unit, don't work on US unit.
The unit hang on INFINITI logo for a minute, then enter safe mode with no media display, only AC display and only volume **** working on the unit.

I found a similar problem on BMW forums: DIY Upgrade Navigation CIC Hard Drive to SSD Solid State Drive - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums
where users are upgrading to SSD and they found that on BMW unit, that use the same QNX OS like Infiniti, they can use only some "cheapo" "Zheino" SSD. They tested with some other expensive SSD and they didn't work.

Maybe that Zheino SSD is the solution for US G37 unit.

If you have the Music Box option, then your unit have HDD inside.
If no Music Box option, then your unit don't have HDD.

I just checked the navigation module... i might be able to read the firmware from module flash.
But i don't know if that will help anyone...
I am still puzzled why the US unit don't work with my SSD...
It must be some difference on firmware and how it handle the HDD parameters.

Well... i bought this US unit initially to replace my EU unit because the HDD on my EU unit was acting up.
Since i managed to replace the HDD on my EU unit with a SSD, i don't need this US unit anymore... and now, is only a fun project...

Going to grab this today hopefully! Thanks for hosting! You the real MVP!

Hoping I can find an ssd that works with the image and play around with the files. I definitely want to try and re-skin the UI.

Factory setup is native IDE/ATA. SSDs are not natively supported by this standard. The SSD has to have a built in controller to convert it to IDE. These are built into the hard drive of course, but standards seem to vary a bit. Upgrading older PCs (that are also natively IDE) to an SSD is a similiar hit or miss situation. Some POST but wont boot, some hang in booting, and some wont even POST.

USA version of the NAV.

I found the Nissan password for the Hard Disk in the APP.BIN file today. Here is the line with the information. It also includes a hard drive Identify line looking for Hitachi or Toshiba drives, this might be why the US version won't boot with the SSD. Still researching.
