Review Cobb Pro Tune Results

Cobb Pro Tune Results
I have to admit other then being handy for monitoring/Datalogging & resetting the ECU my Cobb access port didn't quite justify the $499 price tag even though I bought it back when they were over $600. The stock maps didn't match my mods and although I tried Stage 1 and Stock Style there were no noticeable differences which I attributed to my rather meek mods. Eventually they finally release the Pro tune software and then resolve the timing issue however I still didn't have a good way of locating a local Cobb tuner. I did reach out to Cobb for references for an E-Tuner however there was no response so the device found it's way into my glove box for storage and out of mind.
Move ahead another year... I get an email from a forum member sharing some info concerning a soon to be local Uprev tuner. Tune???, oh yea I was looking for that once upon a time. Before I invested in Uprev I thought I'd check back in with Cobb to see if there were any developments and was surprised to see a dealer listings under the Pro Tune option along with references to local Cobb tuners...OMG, the sleeper has awakened!!! After review and discussion 3SX in Concord, NC seemed like the best bet. These guys are 3000GT specialist and well known in that community and fortunately, offering some comfort, had done a 370z in the past. I however would be the first G37.
I knew from AFR readings I was running very rich in the 10-11's WOT even after the R2C Maxxflow install. My goal was to get AFR mapped properly for optimum performance which I hoped would at least give 5-10 more ponies. As you can see below... Cobb and John at 3SX gave me an early Birthday present! She's sitting pretty now at 12.6 WOT. John spent 5 hours on my car. These results were not expected, no HFC, just an axleback, y-pipe and SRI. I'm betting alot has to due with the stock tune which must just be God awful and goaled for reliable operations across world wide deployment along wtih mods not designed for it. It would really be interesting to see the results from a Stock G37 with just a Cobb AP Pro Tune.
Needless to say I can definitely feel the difference...AT LAST..lol. My Butt dyno wasn't broken after all. It's like a whole new car! Even though they spent 5 hours they only charged for 3 since they didn't call me.. apparently John likes to play with the dyno, total tune cost $450.

Yea I'm not done paying for it I'm sure... there's a ticket around the corner that just feels immenent . I've reset my MPG tracker, hoping to move up from 19 to 20Mpg since I'm always agressively getting to speed limit. We shall see.

Just download AccessPort Tuner Race to check it out and keep for future. Looks like it does have live realtime ECU updates while tuning. I guess Chris must have been refering to the final download of a completed tune taking 7 minutes which is hardly worth the complaint. You can download the docs here.
One other thing I've noticed since the tune is my transmission paddle shifts are much quicker. The delays are gone, it's working like you'd want it to work! I still want to do more testing but I wanted to see if anyone else with a tune noticed this?

Just comparing the tune with stock, looks like the primary changes were to Ignition and Fuel tables, some pretty significant changes at that. He also raised Rev-fuel cut off limit to 8125, Throttle limit to 8000 and speed limit to 228... there's wishful thinking. No changes to Maf calibrations, Fuel mix, Idle or Throttle tables.

Could you elaborate more on what and how he changed on the ignition and fuel tables. I have nearly identical mods to you and I've been working with the uprev tuner and he says he's done everything he can with ignition but it just wont respond to it. I know it's not cobb but shouldn't they act pretty much the same way as far as modifying the tables?

Yea Superflow dyno was used. The Cobb is discontinued, however if you can find someone selling one there's no reason not to get it as it's still supported, just not sold or developed further and it would probably be cheaper. Don't think they supported past 2009 though with base maps.
I'm kind of in the middle on which I'd prefer, I like having a small handy device to use as an active display, datalog and get basic run times. You can make some interesting graphs with the csv's and Excel.
Uprev has the quick map exchange and cruise control integration which would be nice but I'm rarely swapping maps... actually never. I like that Cobb can be easily removed and installed if that was ever required. In the end it meets my needs better.
