Playing with snow, for the first time!

So I'm heading to Japan with friends this week for the Sapporo Snow Festival. This will be my FIRST TIME playing in the snow and in temperatures below 30 deg. (remember, I'm an islander) You guys got any tips with snowboarding, skiing or just being in cold climate.

If you know how to skate/roller blade/water ski, try skiing. If you know how to skateboard/wakeboard/surf, try snowboarding. Those skills transfer over very well!

Bring a big winter jacket and maybe snowboard/ski pants if you're gonna be playing in the snow a lot. I don't know what brands you have out there, so you'll have to do your own research. Good ones can easily run you $250+ so I don't know if you really want to invest in that kinda gear for this ONE time. Plus, bring gloves, hat/toque, scarf, goggles, etc. etc... I don't know, I'm just rambling, I don't know how much you know!

I recommend you don't snowboard, it takes quite some time to learn and you don't want to spend your entire vacation on your ***. Skiing is much easier.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I ordered a bunch of gloves, winter coats and water resistant jackets and pants online already. Some of my friends also said do skiing first because snowboards are harder.
I guess I'm screwed because I don't surf, skate or rollerblade.

And yeah, no yellow snow for me.

I'm looking forward to these though
