Who's Been To Italy?

I am headed to Europe in a couple of months and plan to visit Italy for a couple of days. With the airline I will be using, I have 4 choices for different places to stay in Italy.

Florence
Rome
Milan
Venice

Because there are other countries that I plan on visiting, I will only be able to pick one place......and it will be for a couple of days max. For those that have been to any or all of those cities, what one do you recommend that I visit?

i've been to all 4 cities you listed. if you can only visit one, i would go with venice--it is so unique and unlike any other cities. the other 3 cities all have their +/-, but no place in the world is like venice.

Thanks guys. If you have the time, could you elaborate on what you liked and disliked about each place?

If I had the choice, I would spend a week in Tuscany above any other place, but unfortunately I'll have to save that for a future trip.

venice is special b/c it is on water. there are virtually no motor vehicles, except on lido and the boats, so it has a quietness that cannot be duplicated anywhere. plus, it has the churchs & musuems similar to the other 3 cities.

i hear the summer months are not too pleasant, due to the garbage smell and the heat.

I have cousins that live in Sicily. I have never been north of Naples or Napoli. My family says that the northern Italians look down on the Southern Italians much like the North and South in the U.S.

I loved the relaxed atmosphere and the Beaches! Every afternoon about 5 pm. Everyone gathering in the street just to talk and B.S. Pretty crazy. Lots of nice looking ladies. Things I didn't like: Seemed like every meal I ate had seafood. I love seafood, but Sardines for breakfast?

Anyway I am sure my experience would be different If I weren't visiting family.

The question is, "who has better food?" Northern or Southern Italians?

I really would like to see Venice before I'm old. That is one place on my list of sights to see!

I went to Italy last year, to Florence and Rome.

I really preferred Florence over Rome. Rome had the great ancient ruins, and the Vatican, but Florence seemed more 'genuine'. Rome seemed pretty touristy, but in Florence I really felt like it was closer to how more Europeans live. That, and I got pickpocketed on the subway in Rome, so maybe that soured me to it a little

My cousin went to Venice while she was studying in Italy, and she said it was pretty cool to see the waterways, but the city smelled horrible. And that was in Early April, I can't imagine it in summer.

I have been to all four of those and hands down Venice, I was there in the spring and it never smelled one but i hear people complain about it. Plus the Ferrari store in Venice has a cool F1 car in it.
