Golf

So recently, I've picked up golfing and don't know too much about it. Any recommendations on golf club sets I should get? My cousin gave me a few of his old spare ones, and now I'm looking to purchase a set. Obviously, I'm a pretty big novice. I've also looked on craigslist and saw some stuff. Dunno what I should get? suggestions?

Buy a cheap $400 set at Academy. A huge mistake lots of beginners make is thinking a $2K set of clubs will improve their game. It won't. Not even one stroke if you are a newbie. Practice, practice, practice. And get some lessons from an experienced teaching pro (well worth the money) and practice even more on the fundamentals.

Hey has a low-self esteem remember. He thinks a big club will make up for something he doesn't have

I suggest nothing over $400 until you get the hang of it and get more serious. Really, anything will do because you won't notice all of the subtleties and nuances of the game yet. The difference you'll notice playing with a $400 set and a $1,400 set is your wallet being $1,000 lighter. :b

Sure, cheaper clubs won't be as forgiving (meaning if your swing sucks, it will not forgive you and you'll be losing your balls all day long) and will most likely frustrate you in the beginning, but you will develop better form and technique. This will improve your real game and that's way more important in golf.

Agree on nothing over $400 for an entire set. You can probably even spend less if buy one of the those sets in a box with a bag and everything. Get your swing down early (lessons) and move up from there. I am a 8 handicap and don't work at it that hard anymore. Started with a set in the box, moved up to knock-offs, then forgiving clubs, then finally a high end custom-fitted set which is probably my last set until I have to get a senior set.

Yeah dude go with a cheap set. And don't develop bad habits early on because it will be harder to break them down the line. See if you could take lessons with a local pro at the nearby driving range. Get your mechanics down, then you'll see yourself getting better, no matter how much your clubs are.

An old dude at a golf course once told me "You can't 'BUY' you're golf game". Makes sense

Don't waste your money on graphite shaft irons. Graphite shafts in drivers can be nice, but a little over kill for Irons just starting out. I have a set of King Cobra irons which I really like. My Drivers are of the variety pack, Got a Lynx Black Cat, Callaway Greatest Big Bertha, and an older Taylor Made R something. If you have access to a Roger Dunn, they are really helpful and usually have mats to hit some balls off of into the netting just to see if the feel is good for you.

You really should visit a golf store around you and use a launch monitor before you go buying a set of clubs. Get an idea on how fast you swing so you don't buy clubs with shafts that are either too flexible or too stiff.

Here is a little advice from a scratch golfer (me): (1) the slower you swing, the further the ball will go; (2) don't play in front of me ; ]

get the cheapest working set possible, totally pointless to get an expensive set unless u golf all the time, that being said, i love my pings, and nowadays i rarely golf but when i do im glad i got those clubs
