+1 I think graphite provides a litte more power and forgivenes than steel. You just won't get the precision or feel like you get with steel.

Find a used set of clubs at a pawn shop for a few bucks. If you buy new clubs starting out, you should probably spend as little as you can. You may suck at golf or just decide it's not for you. Don't worry about all the high tech high dollar stuff that guys who have been playing for years waste money on.

As far as a driver goes, don't buy one. You can't hit it anyway.
Seriously though, you can learn the game with a 3 wood, a 3 iron, a 5 iron, a 7 iron, a 9 iron, a pitching wedge, and a putter. I have a buddy and we used to challenge each other to a round with nothing but 1 wood or driver, 3 irons, a wedge, and a putter. It simplifies the game a bit.

Have fun and be patient.

graphite is also a lot lighter and helps let you to shape your own swing rather than being forced into one by a heavier shaft.

The thing about only needing certain clubs is so true. I started golfing probably 10 years ago (i'm almost 20) and my parents had me fitted for only a PW, 9, 7, 5 iron and a driver. The golf pro i used to see said it was the best way to go about it.

I was told that the Golden Bears are pretty good along with the Top-Flite. I also heard that Callaway makes Top-Flite.

Edit: Stupid forum software is editing out the URL due to the world d*i*c*k. Just put that word in for the ****

I think the guys updated the Software on myg37 shorten long URL names. Just put your pointer on the link and check were it goes in the bottom of your explorer window (if you use Explorer).

Nevermind, looks like there is an issue with the URL posting in this thread or maybe the forum. I posted the URL in there correctly but it saves it as ... and the link won't work.

Ahhh d i c k I was trying to figure out what sporting good name could be filtered!!

But anyways dude, $200 is a good start. You should also consider getting a few lessons when you can. While practice makes perfect, if you're not practicing correctly, you can forget perfection.

I've tried both and pro's have advised me against them. Price wise they are obviously more, but their arguement is. With a average golfer, steel shafts will give you a more consitant shot. Granted a graphite will produce a more accurate, more powerful shot, but only to a near professional golfer. the best example he gave me was swimming. Olympic swimmers are swimming as fast as the human body can possibly go, just to get that extra little edge to grab an extra millisecond they shave the hair or wear full body suits to prevent drag. even though its very minimal the differnce. When Tiger plays golf against Love. they are two of the best golfers, they need the graphite shafts because they are so precise as it is, they need every little piece of help to get an advantage on the other player. For newbies or just average golfers, the money spent and your skill level doesn't justify it. But if you want to look super baller go all graphite and people will be impressed by your clubs not your game. "The distance it travels depends, on the Indian throwing the axe, not the axe itself." I think arnold palmer said something like that.

I don't know what kind of golf pro you're talking to, but graphite shafts are much more forgiving than steel shafts.. The average golfer will lose distance when switching from graphite to steel.

Your sources say graphite is better for near-pro golfers? Why is it that all pro golfers use steel shafts?

Steel gives you more control and makes it easier to shape your shot (something beginners cant do anyway)

Graphite is lighter, allows you to create more clubhead speed and thus hit the ball farther.

Steel shafts also give a lot more feedback on off center shots (i.e. you feel the sting in your hands). Thats another reason they arent good for beginners who have not yet developed a consistant swing or consistant ball striking.

But of course, its ultimately the decision of each individual golfer. Test out both, see what you prefer.

there is no way graphite produces a more accurate shot than steel. yea, more power because of the flex, but sacrifices accuracy and shot control. i have yet to see a pro or near pro using graphite shaft irons.

Costco has a Nicklaus 18 piece set that retails for $600ish for $250. That's what my wife got me for our anniversary. It's a very nice set.
