Hell, I've had my current Bridgestone J33B's for almost 3 years now only because I haven't been playing as much as I used to (also because they're freakin sweet too)
My last set of irons I purchased in 2001, TM Super Steel's, I play on average 3 times per week and I've only had to replace the grips about two years ago. Grooves are still in good shape. I just got the R7s about 18 months ago. Prior to that I played with some Yonex clubs my dad bought in the early 90s. Yes, they will last you a while.

I'm not saying they won't last that long, but the cast clubs like yours will last longer with no maintenance than the forged blades I play unless you keep them properly maintained by getting the lofts/lies checked every now and then.

My dad was playing his MP-14's for the longest time until he got a set of J33B's like mine.

But on a serious note, you should change the grips more than every two years. I go through about 3 sets a year and possibly 5 sets if I play a lot during the summer

I've hit both and I personally like the TaylorMade R7 Quad Driver 9.5 better... Sumo2 Driver is nice too though...

I only have the SQ because I borrowed it from my club house and they "forgot" so I just kept playing with it. I probably wouldn't have bought it. I really want to try those new Ping G10 drivers but can't find a shop with a demo I can borrow without taping it to hell! I have hit the R7 Driver and also have an R5, I can honestly say I get a lot more out of the SQ and it has a bigger sweet spot. Try and find a used one if you decide to get one.

callaway x14/x16 irons are good beginner irons.

the wider the sole of the clubhead (for irons) the easier they are to hit for beginners.

also, anybody else use titleist clubs?

i still use a 9.5 degree 905R driver, 13 degree 906F2, 19 degree 585 H and the Z blend irons.

The only Tity club in my bag is my 8.5* 905S with a 103x Diamana Blue Board. I still have my set of 680's in the attic though

Your best bet would to get fitted on a Vector/launch monitor with what gives you optimal distance and workability, and not going with what others are playing because they hit this or that once. Driver head is one thing, but the shaft is what makes all the difference in the world (kick points, flex, weight, tip stiffness, etc).

IMO - if you are strictly a beginner, I would not spend a lot of money on fancy equipment. Get a decent quality set, learn how to play the game. Heck, make absolutely sure you like the game and have the time and money to play. Then, go drop some money on some nicer stuff.

My bag now has

Callaway X-20s (non-tour)
Nike OZ putter
Cleveland HiBore driver
Nike Sasquatch 3 and 5 wood

Need to get a gap wedge and maybe a new putter

Don't waste money on Graphite shafts, unless your a pro, or really old graphites are not neccesary and can be less forgiving than a steel shaft. Drivers are a different story, graphite will be a better club but also much more expensive. I currently have a full Iron set from King Cobra, they ran me around $400 for 2 through all three wedges, pitching, sand, and trouble. And I'm rocking a hand me down Callaway warbird from gramps, and a Couple Lynx Black cats. My drivers are out dated, but i hear Taylor made still has a great driver.

graphite shafts are better for beginners, imo.
