Kinda New...
Whats the deal folks...
I bought my Black G37 6MT coupe back in April...I joined the forum soon after. I love the car...the shifting paddles grew on me, but I hate the delay...I previously owned a 5sp MT 98 Max. But I'm just now starting to research doing some mods on G for this coming spring. And I do have one question that comes to mind...does lowering the car with lowering springs vs. using coil-overs require anything additional besides putting the springs on the car? I had a 98 Maxima before I got the G, and lowering with springs left more space in the front wheel well than the back...I hated that, I want an equal amount of space between the tire and the well in the front and the back and I'm just wondering if the springs will do that without having to do something additional..like some shaving or whatever. Can anybody shed light on that for me?

Try the search function. Many threads on this issue. Can also check the Suspension section of the forum. No personal experience from me. Most say the springs don't drop the same front to rear. Coilovers can be adjusted so that everything is even.

hey there, welcome to myg37!
Lowering springs lower the car a set amount, which vary by brand. Tein S. Techs will drop your car about 2 inches, while Eibachs may be around 1.2" Also varying by brands is the height from front to back. Some brands drop the front a ilttle bit more than the rear, and vise versa. A lot of people have success with the Eibach Pro Kit, which is a relatively conservative drop. The more aggressive of a drop you get, the more likely you will have camber issues, which is the uneven wearing of your tires. To combat this, we buy camber kits. Eibach pro kits do not require camber kits, just a simple alignment after installation is good. Now for coilovers: They range in price and quality, so just pick something that fits your budget. On the lower end of the spectrum theres BC racing, and then going up to KW-V3's and JIC coils. The more expensive ones allow for height adjustment as well as dampening, and rebound. That stuffs mostly for racing though i haven't really touched it.

). PM Black Betty for details.Eibachs will most likely give you what you're looking for. The drop gives a pretty balanced front and rear. Coils will give you adjustability so you can change the height but it's also a lot more costly than springs. If you just want the look, springs will do. If you want performance (or if you go to the track), maybe coils. After the springs, you'd have to wait a week or 2 for the springs to settle then spend about 80 bucks for an alignment. That's the other hidden cost with lowering the car. If you're lowering on stock wheels, there shouldn't be any shaving required, no rubbing. If you're on 20s, it's a whole different story.

As with any car that uses gas shocks, lowering on springs only will ultimately cause premature failure in the shocks. However, shocks should be cheap to replace, since there will eventually be sets for sale on the board due to people going to coils
![]() Coils will allow you more adjustability, while springs give you one set height. Pick your poison! You can't really go wrong with either on a street driven car. |
