Question about the 7AT

Sometimes when i stop at a long red light or at a drive thru, I want to put my car on N instead of D and hitting on the break. I wonder if that would do any damage to the transmission in the long run ?
Thank you

I think it's actually better to move the shifter to N rather than keeping it on D while stationary

shifting into N while braking saves the brakes from wear
and at the traffic lights, being in N also saves the brakes and saves gas too.

Not following this at all, it's an automatic. Shifting in to neutral while rolling to a stop would wear more on your breaks since you're not taking advantage of any engine braking at all. One nice thing with the auto is it can detect a sudden need for hard breaking and force a downshift to engage engine braking agressively to further help you stop. While the guy in the manual would be "Oh sheitting" and just stopping at the brakes and bracing you've got breaks, transmission and engine working to slow you down.

If your at a stop, your breaks arent moving, there's no friction, and shifting into neutral again won't offer any advantage break wear wise.

The only time I'm not in D,DS or a manual gear would be at a lengthy stop like fast food in which case I'll engage park to sit back and relax, which is better then Neutral since you don't have to break either. Neutral would be for when I need to push the car a few feet without bothering to start it up..lol.

overlooked that....lol.... thanks Red

also.. if it's a long stop light (flat road) and your brakes are hot... it's good to go in N and let the brakes off..so you dont warp them ....

I think OP was referring to moving the shifter to N while stationary rather than braking from a roll.

When you're in D, the car is trying to move. But you're forcing it to stop by holding the rotors from the other end. That introduces some torsion in the axles, I'm not saying they can't take it, but why introduce any sort of stress which might hurt in the long run

Yea, sure you could use Neutral for FF stops, but park is even better and probably safer.
