08 6MT - 1st to 2nd Gear

Does anyone else feel like the shifting from 1st to 2nd gear is rough? Sometimes I have to jam it in there and sometimes I can hear a clunky noise. Also 1st gear doesn't seem to get you very far... do you guys sometimes just start in 2nd?

you shouldn't start it in second... are you sure you're depressing the clutch ALL the way down when you shift? i rarely have this problem... but i think it's cause i'm lazy and not pushing the clutch all the way down

If it crunches it's usually because you tried to shift before getting the clutch fully disengaged. Make sure that you get your foot to the floor before you try to move the shift lever. (It happens to me too once in a while, generally just due to not being careful all the time)

I have always felt 1st to 2nd on G35's and G37's were clunky.

I know exactly what you mean. I make sure the clutch is pressed all the way down to the floor, then I shift. The shift from 1st to 2nd is never smooth, there is always a clunk in between.

There's absolutely no need to floor the clutch for your shifts. Either something is wrong with your car, or perhaps you're new at driving a MT but the 1-2 shift shouldn't be clunky or rough.

In a car with 6 forward gears, how fast do you expect first gear to go? This transmission has very short gears and a close ratio. 1st is only designed to get your forward momentuym going from a stop, not for cruising at speed.

The clutch mechanism is fully disengaged long before the pedal reaches the floor. It won't hurt anything. You should learn by feel to be able to tell how far the clutch pedal needs to be depressed to fully disengage. About half way or so.

Put the car in 1st and slowly let out the clutch pesal without using the accelerator. See where it starts to engage? That works about the same when you are pressing it to disengage the clutch too.

Why risk the synchro damage of shifting with a partially engaged clutch? Putting it to the floor ensures that the clutch is fully disengaged, and sets up a consistent distance to the engage point. Muscle memory is much more useful when the circumstances of the motion never change. In the long run you'll drive more smoothly, more of the time.

Even when I'm on the track shifting quickly, I still push the clutch all the way to the floor. It's just one less thing to worry about when I'm trying to rev-match and get ready for the next corner.

i feel its a bit clunky and ive always had a manual....

i find when shifting from first to second i like to be in a lil higer rpms like 4200 or so feels like a much smoother shift, no clunkyness, but when i shift to second at about 2000 i feel its much clunkier! if any of that made sense : S lol

I grind once in a while going to 5th only cause im being lazy and its the gear that requires you to push ur wrist away from your own self the most...

1st to 2nd, while i feel is the trickiest shift to perfect without burning clutch, i personally to do not clunking problems withit unless its due to poor rev matching. in fact when i push the clutch in i feel like the gear itself slides down into 2nd for me with a tap, with the least effort compared to all other shifts...

I recently started hearing a clunk between 1st and second gear in my car - but at first i just thought it was me - since im new to manual trans. After reading that others had the same issue - i thought it could be something more - i tent to shift into 2nd at lower rpms (around 2.2 - 2.5k) and usually its smooth - i think the times when i push in the clutch really hard and fast - i hear the clunk from the back of the car (at least thats what it sounds like). I take it that this is not normal? Is this the same sound people on this thread are hearing?

Clunk at the back of the car = Diff taking a shock from abrupt clutch engagement.

More specficially, you engaged hard enough to shock the drivetrain, but not hard enough to break the tires loose.
