Not sure the price, but the Nikon D40 is a great camera.. but I will agree with Keng, I have also heard great things about the Canon.

I looked for one with image stabilization and ended up picking the Pentax K100 since at the time (2 years ago) the Nikon didn't offer that option unless you bought the next tier up. Also the Pentax image stabilization is in the body so any existing lens is compatible, whereas some other cameras require special lenses. The newer version is the K200 and I know someone who recently bought one and is very happy with it. You can get it with a macro and zoom lense package for well under $1K.

I dont know much about camera. The D40 always seems to be popular.

I do know that lenses are much more important than the body.

I'm also in the market for a DSLR, But im having trouble deciding, I wanna do some sick photography in my spare time, and make some nice HDR images.

CANON Canon EOS Rebel XSi Black 12.2 MP 3X Zoom Digital Camera - MSRP $749.99 : Digital Cameras & Camcorders | Dell

NIKON Nikon D5000 12.3 MP Digital SLR Camera (with 18-55 mm Lens) MSRP: $849.99 : Digital Cameras & Camcorders | Dell

Or the T1i? Whats your pick?

For those that are serious about getting into photography consider buying a body and picking out your lens rather then buying a camer/lens package and possibly even spending more on the lens then the body for the best results. Also what and when {not to mention how much you have to spend } you plan to photograph will dictate a lot about what lens focal lengths and aperture to get. A kit lens(the packaged deal lens) will be virtually useless to a wildlife/nature photographer for example. Want to photography your coin/stamp collection, likewise you'd be better off with a macro lens. Another advantage to buying the lens seperately is you'll get a much faster lens (greater aperture) as well as other features like image stabalization, build quality & weather proofing in addition to better optics.

Focal Lengths and typical uses:

Lens Focal LengthTerminologyTypical Photography
Less than 21 mmExtreme Wide AngleArchitecture
21-35 mmWide AngleLandscape
35-70 mmNormalStreet & Documentary
70-135 mmMedium TelephotoPortraiture
135-300+ mmTelephotoSports, Bird & Wildlife

Also note entry level cameras will not be full frame sensors and will introduce whats refered to as a crop factor. Canons for example have a CF of 1.6 so a 50mm prime lens or lens focal length setting in the case of a zoom lens on a XTi1 for example is actually 50x1.6 or an 80mm lens. Full frame cameras would allow you a 1:1 but be prepared to spend $2K+ on the body alone. CF's not bad as a mater of fact it works for wildlife photographers.. not so much for landscape photographers however.

Also whatever lens you buy get a UV Haze Filter for it which serves to both protect the lens from damage as well as filter haze. A circular polarizing filter is another must have and is great for car photography and anywhere else you want to get rich colors and control glare.

Buying a DSLR and keeping it in auto mode is like buying a automatic Corvette. It's not that hard to learn the basics and the net is full of info, spend some time reading up on basic composition and DSLR photography, it really isn't that hard to learn the basics and the pay offs are huge. The difference between a great image and a snapshot is not in the camera, it's the photographer.

Red, thats some great advice. Based on some of your posts on here it seems like you really know your stuff on photography. Are there any good tutorial type sites you know of to help learn how to take "photographs" and not just pictures? I've looked all over and read dozens of differnt sites, but it seems like it just gets more confusing. I've got a Nikon D70 that my dad bought several years ago that came with a standard lense, and he also bought a different lense that has alot more zoom to it, thats all i know about it. I know the camera can take good pics, but everytime i try the pics are full of grain and noise and look like crap.

A year ago I couldn't spell DSLR, now I'm an expert at spelling DSLR.

Start off by finding training on the D70, usually this will give you both basic digital photography instruction and how to use the D70 which really helps to tie them together for quick results. In less then a few hours you should be able to make decent exposures. Just google Nikon D70 Video, Nikon D70 training, Nikon D70 Books. The first thing besides basic control of your camera you'll want to learn is to understanding the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. After you get your camera and that down your light years from where you are now.

Youtube has a number of videos on photographic topics and specific D70 training. The more you learn the more you'll find you want to learn as new topics are mentioned like HDR, the zone system, depth of field, metering choices ect. Enjoy the ride, it's a blast.
