Martial arts???

The world is a very dangerous place right now. With the recession going on, there are lots of robbery and kidnapping cases. Three days ago my girlfriend's ex-bf tried to provoke even though I was twice his size, he has guts but I didn't want start anything because it was in a friend's wedding and you never know these days how many guns they carry.

So my question is, what kind of martial art would be nice to pick up to protect my loved ones (at the same time lose some weight ). I was thinking Wing Chun but my friend told me about a martial art called Krav Maga, which I find pretty effective because it's basically street martial arts. I still think Karate, Tae Kwan Do and all these take loooooong time to progress.

What do you think?

Master Smith, Master Wesson, and Sensei Sam Colt taught me my martial arts. All I need to know.

i suggest capoeira, once he steps up to you, start your ginga and u'll get the big WTF face, then start au'ing (cartwheeling) and watch him smile, then he'll forget why he was mad and the world became a little more safe

but if that doesn't work, bust a au batido to his head! :P

This question coming from Texas. There is a gun show every week here for a reason.
To drop weight: Punching Bag, Run, Jog, Take Green Tea pills. You will drop weight and build endurance for when **** hits the fan.

if u watch any fight on tv, u know mma (mixed martial arts) is where it's at. plenty of gyms out there that will teach you the basics.

any person strictly one discipline will be owned by a person that knows more. so if u wanna know how to protect ur family, i suggest mma

Kravmaga... as my police academy instructor states, every move in kravmaga is made so you end up at your opponents back so you can "terminate" his life... i love it so far...

I did Krav Maga for two years, and I tell you, it kicks your butt and they put you through real life situations. Give it a try.

MMA, kick boxing. Krav Maga is pretty hardcore though, street style. You can look into American Kenpo too.

MMA! wing chun is only good for close combat because of the sticky hands...but it's not like every fight u'll have the dude standing infront of you like a wooden dummy...

if you wanna prep urself for worse case scenario's...u'll need to do lots of cardio exercise to build ur endurance (sometimes fighting isn't always about who punches harder, but rather who can last the fight the longest)....and some fights might even require you to run 10 city blocks because you catch up with the guy (or vise versa)...

you also definitely want to work on your flexibility....you can't kick someone in the head if you can't even lift your legs past your waist....

but my suggestion is definitely MMA....since UFC is so popular right now, there should be a lot of places teaching and training people to become UFC fighters...

keep in mind, when your fighting, anything goes....it's about survival of the fittest and the smartest....real life isn't some high school fight behind the closest convenience store...maybe it's wise for you to carry some sort of self defense weapon if this is path you wish for your life to take....

+1, I've been taking boxing for 3 years now, and one thing I learned that a lot of people try to put all their strength in to their arms, while standing stationary with their legs.

One thing that I tried once and got my @ss kicked in was kickboxing, sh1t is hard but fun!

stand up=muay tai
ground=Brazillian Jiu Jitsu

those are some very good and solid basics

just have fun. even good martial artists can get beat up on a fight...too many factors when you are in the real world and not in a dojo with mats and rules.
