Any one know anything about torrenting and utorrent??
I just moved to a new apartment for school and have a new ISP and now I cant upload hardly at all. D/L is fine around 1.5MB/sec but I can't get over about 30kB/sec uploading and most the time it sits around 2kB. speedtest.net shows I can DL and UL around 1.2-1.5MB/sec. I've got my router set up for a static IP and forwarded a port for utorrent. Encryption is enabled and there is an exception in windows firewall for utorrent. But still when I test if the port is forwarded it still says it's closed. I've got DHT, Peer discovery, and Peer exchange all unchecked. Max upload rate is unlimited. I don't think my ISP is throttling cause i can download at around 1.5MB just fine. I dont know what else to try, i've done just about everything. Anyone have any other suggestions? uTorrent still just has the red exclamation mark.
Also, the way the internet works at my new apartment is they provide internet and I just have a network plug in my room. Then I've got my own personal Dlink router plugged into that for my own wireless network. Could there be another router/firewall after my own router that could be limiting me? |

Why are you on static IP instead of DHCP?
What happens when you limit upload to say 60kB/s? See if you can get past 30. How did you set up your router? Try connecting straight to the wall, DHCP, to see if you get a higher upload rate.

I meant I set up my computer for an internal static IP for my router. I went to portforward.com and followed that and thats what it said to do. I think i know the problem now. I get most of my stuff from a private tracker, so earlier i dl'd something from a public one just to see and once it finished it was able to upload around 300kB/sec. But it was still really sparatic. It would go fairly high, then drop off for a little then go back up and just repeat.

Have you checked whether or not your ISP is throttling torrents?

^I searched around on google and couldn't really find anything saying they did. I've got protocol encryption on and peer guardian running too just in case.

It doesn't matter; it's really easy for ISPs to detect encrypted data and throttle you (this is controversial as legit connections are affected, like dialing to VPN I presume).
My ISP (Rogers) does that, and it's actually faster when I DON'T encrypt the transfers.

Just replace wherever you see the word "torrent" with "porn". There. You should be very concerned now.

if you plug directly into a wall RJ-45 jack, chances are the apartment has its own router distributing IP addy's to the various apartments.
the implications of this is that when you forwarded the port within your Dlink router, that still doesn't forward the port from the apartment's router. the way this would work is let's assume it's port 20000. you have to forward port 20000 from the apartment's router to your IP addy, then from your Dlink to your internal IP addy. the reason you're actually connecting is due to the way uTorrent connects to the swarm. basically, you are only connecting (either up or down) to a fraction of the seeders and peer available to you within the swarm. if you could somehow manage to get the apartment to forward a port to your IP addy, then you'd see drastic changes (for the better) in your torrent connection speeds.
