graphite is also a lot lighter and helps let you to shape your own swing rather than being forced into one by a heavier shaft.

Seriously though, you can learn the game with a 3 wood, a 3 iron, a 5 iron, a 7 iron, a 9 iron, a pitching wedge, and a putter. I have a buddy and we used to challenge each other to a round with nothing but 1 wood or driver, 3 irons, a wedge, and a putter. It simplifies the game a bit.

The thing about only needing certain clubs is so true. I started golfing probably 10 years ago (i'm almost 20) and my parents had me fitted for only a PW, 9, 7, 5 iron and a driver. The golf pro i used to see said it was the best way to go about it.
